Hey guys .. curious about the 8600 gt clocks on Vostro/Inspirons. Not sure if it's been asked but I couldn't find the answer anywhere.

In Vista whether on High Performance or Power Saver settings, ATI Tool reports the clocks to constantly be on 475/400. When I take off Aero the temp drops by about 6 degrees to 47 but no change in clocks. With Aero on it's about 52-53.

On XP, it ran around 42-44 when idle but the clocks would be at 170/100 when I wasn't doing anything and then under load would increase to 475/400. What can I do to make Vista turn down the clocks if I'm not doing anything besides typing a document?
    ---
If Aero is disabled why would Vista still be running warmer? I don't understand why if I'm not doing anything in Vista the temp is 53, but in XP it's 43. I'm curious as to why with Vista the clocks are always at 475/400 while XP changes. I noticed after a few hours XP kept my laptop much cooler (not sure if it's directly because of this) but I'm trying to isolate why and what I can do about it.

try checking your power settings -- set it on power saver in the system tray.

No matter what power setting I apply, the clocks remain unaffected.

Just curious if anyone using Vista has their clocks at 170/100. Mine have never gone that low in Vista.

Maybe because for some of the better aero ****, it goes into low level 3d mode?

Figured it out... ATI Tool doesn't correctly report the correct clocks
