I cant seem to find a clear answer on this.

I have a new Dell Notebook on its way. I may upgrade the version of vista but I have a concern. From my understanding, dell does not send the upgrade disk. Is this correct? If so, how am I supposed to upgrade? Thanks

I do know that Dell includes a full version of whatever OS you chose (In your case, Vista Home Premium) on a DVD. I would assume that you could use this as an anytime upgrade disk, since it is a full Vista disk unless Dell did anything special to it.

so i guess that is the question then. can anyone confirm that the disk that dell sends can be used as the upgrade disk?

also, what happens if say a year from now i need to reinstall the OS. Will that disk reflect the fact that I upgraded or will it install the original premium version that came with the system?

    Thanks

Dell sends a disk customized with the edition of Vista that you ordered. If you were to do a clean install, it would automatically install the edition your machine came with.

I think you can still go through the Windows Anytime Upgrade, and it will prompt you to download the necessary files to complete the upgrade without the Vista DVD.

As the guy above said, you will be prompted to download any missing files. Also if you want the anytime upgrade disc that badly, i'm sure you can find the disc image on a torrent site. And since you are actually paying for your product key, it should be legal for you to to download the disc image.

As I said above, I am 99% sure that you cannot use the Dell disc, as it is customized to install one edition of Vista.

You can still simply run the anytime upgrade shortcut from within Vista, and it will prompt you to download whatever files you need, so your question about the Dell Vista disc is basically moot as that disc is not needed, AFAIK.

Actually all the versions are on the OEM Vista disk but the default version, which is marked on the disk, will be installed unless you provide a different installation key. The installation key will determine the version of Vista to be installed.

    Hello all,
This is too late to help Samuel613 but may help others.
I just did an online upgrade from Vista Home Premium to Ultimate and I did not have the Vista Anytime Upgrade DVD. I used the one Dell shipped with my laptop which had the OS for Home Premium. It took a little under one hour and it did work.

Now if I had just tried this before looking all over for an Upgrade DVD but I was too paranoid to try.

For the truly paranoid my Dell DVD is labeled "Reinstallation DVD Windows Vista Home Premium 32Bit"
