Does anyone foresee any problems if I were to try and load Vista home premium on the Latitude D630, as Dell does not offer it as an option on their web site?.. Or do you think Dell would be flexible enough to offer it to me if I asked?

It all depends on your specs. If you got any less than 2 gb of ram, decent video card and fast processor core 2 duo 2.0 ghz or above I wouldn't bother. Vista is a huge resource hog. But its personal preference really.

If you plan to install vista then make sure you all of the drivers http://support.dell.com/support/downloads/driverslist.aspx?os=WLH&osl=EN&catid=-1&impid=-1&servicetag=&SystemID=LATITUDE+D630&hidos=WW1&hidlang=en

Do I forsee any problems? Well that all depends on your experience level with computers and the configuration of the D630. In my experience with all windows OS there are always problems at some point. I think you would have less with XP but you might enjoy the cool look of Vista. Up to you.

Vista Business and Ultimate is offered for that model, so Home Premium would run just fine as well. Now whether Dell will allow you to configure it with H.P. I don't know, you could call and ask. The Latitude is considered Dell's business line, so it's understandable why their standard build would be around Vista Business or Ultimate. Home Premium doesn't have business-oriented features such as domain membership and BitLocker.

FWIW, Vista Home Premium ran fine, with full Aero effects, on my Toshiba Satellite with C2D T5200 (1.6Ghz), integrated Intel graphics, and 1GB. Although I did upgrade to 2GB shortly after buying it, as I also recommend 2GB as a practical minimum for most any modern computer OS, especially Vista since it's a bit more resource heavy.

It's kind of funny how the minimum for xp was 512mb recommended and with vista its 2gb recommended.
