Hello, finally decided to get the 1500 even though i think the 1400 looks better and like 14.1" screens size. Now my last debate is should i get Vista home or XP home? my set up is 1.6 c2d, 1g ram (will get 2 aftermarket.) 8400m gs GPU, 120g hd. I have hear people with the same setup say that vista ran like crap when they went to Xp this computer was amazing. ive heard others say vista works just fine with this set up. both of these OS will cost about 100-125 aftermarket so i could always convert to vista later when it becomes a standard (efficant) OP, any thoughts?

Vista is fine, and since the latest updates, is stable and quick.
Most people have xp just sitting around (I have 2000 pro and XP pro discs), so going with vista just gets you another copy of an OS.
I'd say go with vista...you can always return it if you decide you don't like it. -
Cool but will it operate with my current set up if i inted to use the notebook, for internet, casual gaming, music, movies ect?
-
Will vista operate? Uh yeah, it works fine on my toshiba with t2080 and 512mb ram, and it works great on my vostro 1500 with 1.6 and 2GB ram. It worked great when I had 1gb ram in it.
It also runs great on my e1505 with a 1.83ghz (533 FSB) and 1 GB ram. -
Personally I can't go back to XP.
Vista has too many extra little nifty interface features I'm too used to using, it runs faster, and it has never crashed on me. -
I tried out Vista for 3 weeks on the laptop and even though I love it on my desktop, after 2 days with XP on the Vostro it is much better. Gaming is slightly better, the system is far more responsive. XP loads in 33 seconds, Vista took 1 minute 8 seconds at best. A little cooler, 18 more minutes battery life with XP. With Vista my hard drive would never stop churning, it was getting really annoying. I ordered Vista because its nice to get the copy but in the end it just hogs more resources without delivering enough besides a pretty interface.
I'll probably return to it after SP1 is released but for now XP is packing better performance for me. -
Sooner or later you will switch to Vista anyway, so take it now and save the money you would have to spend for it later.

With 2 gigs of RAM and the dedicated video card, XP will FLY and you will get spectacular performance. You don't do any serious gaming also so that is more than adequate. However, Vista is becoming much better than it used to be and eventually you'll probably want to upgrade. Make sure to get the 2 gigs of RAM if you're going to get Vista. The performance difference with 2 gigs from 1 on Vista is vast (in a good way).

AH, its seems that to adequatly run vista you need a rather upgraded system - perhapse a slightly better processor, more ram for sure, a faster HD? maybe and im sure the GT GPU would help so id almost be paying 400+ more to make vista run the way xp would with 1 gig, 1.6c2d, gs gpu, and 5400 hd. is that worth it? a copy of either will cost me 100 or so, my concern is that i will get vista with a basic system and have to upgrade components ram (which i will do either way so i guess i cannot add that in the equation) hd, and gpu or purchase xp if i dont like vista. is it even possible to upgrade the GPU or processor after the face with no hitches?? sorry if this sounds poor but i dont have much notebook exp. thanks

go with vista it makes more sense
-
XP can run on 512 megs of RAM decently while Vista needs at least 1 gig of RAM.
It amounts to what 80 bucks more perhaps? -
Ah i see, Waveblade are you happy with your v1400? you have the same setup i was thinking about getting? how does it run. have you tried to game at all on it or run multi programs?
-
Pick Vista. I was apprehensive about it when I received my laptop, but it works wonderfully. Stable, no crashes, looks nice, great features, and if you tweak it right, it's very responsive.

)
It seems rather smooth, I don't have any hang ups that I had with XP where the CPU would be 0% and it'd just hang there. I'm quite satisfied.
I tried the medal of honor demo which was able to run it on the 800x600 on med/high settings. Again, probably my drivers aren't up to date.
Photoshop takes about 10 seconds to load up which is alright. I'm not quite sure what else you want to know but ask away. -
Well i just noticed that the price had gone up on the v1500 deals ;(
Crash has a much better platform then i am looking so i hope vista would run like a charm with it, i think i am going to go with vista its just a matter of what options. I guess i will be leaving it basic, still unlclear on what screen to opt for? seems like the non + models dont have the grany issues. so the basic 1.6 c2d v 1500 is 730 with 2 year next day warrany issue, ? is this even worth getting? it seems like if you have to mail your comp out once to dell youve paid for it.
Thanks Waveblade. not sure what to ask, unfortunaly im unsure about the whole thing. this is my frist notebook purchase aside from a c610 latidude, which was great btw.
Vista or XP (home) for Vostro 1500
