just purchased a notebook running on Vista Home. When i was configuring it, there wasn't any option for a re-install cd. Why is this so? Does it mean i wont be getting one? If not, why? I purchased a 640m running on XP late last year and i got a re-install cd.

Stupid company policy not only for Dell, but lots of other comapnies. Contact Dell for a restore CD.

This raises a quick question for me.

I received a Vista re-install disk, but they still partitioned 10GB of my HDD for restore...

Can someone refresh my memory as to how to UN-partition that 10GB and add it back to my actual C: space?

To jump onto this one. The discs "re-installation disc for win media center" and "vista upgrade" What do they do?

Could I do a fresh install on win media center then upgrade? My computer is suffering from junk overload and slowing down.

I have a 640m/1405 that I purchased in December. I had requested the Vista Home Premium upgrade and did the install this past weekend.

There are a few ways to do this:

    1. Straight upgrade from XP.
    2. Fresh install of XP then upgrade to Vista
    3. Boot from Vista CD and install WITHOUT entering key, then once it's installed, perform an upgrade from within Vista and enter your key.

I opted for option 3. However I toasted the MediaDirect partition as well as the system restore partition. It went well as I had backed up my data before hand. I didn't have any problems with drivers or anything.

The re-installation discs allow for a clean install. I think all of the Dell laptops comes with the re-installation disc for Vista to allow for the Windows Anytime Upgrade bit. Both my first laptop and the replacement one came with re-installation discs for XP.
