When you install vista, at the page where you pick the partition for vista to be installed on, there is the option to load a driver.

Get the Intel AHCI drivers and put them on a usb stick and then load it up. It will then be installed during the Vista setup.

Im pretty sure since the drive was in ata mode through bios when you installed, Vista didnt automatically install the ahci (sata) drivers. Get them from Dell, install them, then reboot in ahci mode and you should be good to go. Vista has those drivers in it, you just didnt have the mode enabled, so it didnt think you needed them.

XP is another story. You can slipstream them into the OS, or boot with a thumbdrive or floppy to load third party drivers.

Give it a go. Let me know how it works.
