I just did a reinstall of Vista Ultimate on my e1705. It went very smoothly and the system seems to be running faster.

I bought the 4yr premium warranty plan and it came with a 3 year subscription to McAfee 8.0. I did not register it yet because I figured on doing a clean install and starting everything fresh without all the bloatware.

Now that all the bloatware is gone McAfee is gone too. How do I get it back?

I understand it is not part of windows....

The system did not come with a seperate disk for McAfee so what I want to know if I have to go back to Dell for it or can I get it online?

I guess I will try the website. Hopefully I didn't loose my subscription.

I will have to be more specific with my questions in the future.....

I'd say call Dell and have them send you the CD.

I spoke to Dell tech over the phone and chatted online with India as well. Both proved to be fruitless. I was told that there is no software provided by Dell and I should download it from the Mcafee site. Since I did not register my subscription I have no account set up with Mcafee.

I am now restoring the system to the original factory image and will try a clean install all over again but now I will register Mcafee first and see what happens.

Can someone remind me why I should do a clean install rather than just uninstalling the bloatware?

Also, after reinstalling Vista should I run the Dell driver and utilities disk as well?

I also have the same query, I also have a MacAfee subscription for 15mnths, and I need to do a clean install of the system and install windows XP. I haven’t registered my copy of MacAfee yet.

    Please advice.

believe you can download it from McAfee by logging in to their site. That's what I did if I remember correctly.

I spent some time talking to Dell support today. They did not have a disc to send me and told me to talk to McAfee. I tried to explain my situation to a heavy accented Indian gentleman at McAfee and could not get him to understand my problem. Basically he told me to go back to Dell. I finally got an American (I think) at Dell support. She was very helpful and agreed that I somehow lost the subscription after she remote accessed my computer. I was sent to another tech and worked out a deal to get a $75 coupon to "replace" the software if I wanted. I guess this was a blessing in disguise. I really didn't want McAfee anyway. It looks like it has a lot of the same applications that are already on Vista other than virus scan. I think I will try some free AV and use the $75 to buy a carry case from Dell instead.....

I had the same situation when I had done a clean install of Vista Ultimate 64 bit back in November. When I had bought my E1705 I got I believe it was two or three years of Trend Micro Internet Security Suite, Dell sent me the disks but it was version 12 and at the time no update was available for Dell customers through Trend Micro and Dell was practically useless as you stated before. I just gave up and installed Avast Home Edition and they offer a free version that supports both 32bit and 64bit editions of Vista. And I have not had a problem with it and as far as a firewall, I just used the built in one but to my understanding Comodo offers a free firewall, but I have not installed it to say it will work with vista.
