    Have you:

    A) Purchased your computer off the street of Shanghai,

    B) Repeatedly hit your computer with a sledgehammer,

    C) Downloaded a driver that was intended for an Inspiron computer,

or D) Edited in MS Paint? =D

If you answered yes to any of these, then we may have found your problem ;)

The problem is that it doesn't say that it's an XPS.

Some places on dell's website calls it an "inspiron XPS," other places on the site refer to the model as an XPS. They need to make up their mind. My original understanding was that the inspiron and XPS lines were different. One was a luxury line and the other wasn't. So I guess it is an Inspiron. I prefer to call mine an XPS.

I have the same model as you and it also calls it self an Inspiron M1330 on that screen. So fear not :p. Since our computers are twins, we should let them hang out together :p.

There is a previous thread about this. Dell really should call it XPS M1330 since they charge a lot more for the XPS line than they do the Inspiron.

Basically, it is an Inspiron with a different name and a few more perks - it is not, say, a Latitude, which comes with "North-American-based support". It does have XPS Support, though.

The original XPS, by the way, was a laptop almost identical to the Inspiron 9100. Then, Dell decided to make it its own line, but its roots are clearly Inspiron.

Mine says Inspiron, too, as do others; your machine is not defective. Dell's imaging team should have been better-informed, though.

Model number (along with the logo) is not detected by the OS, it is hardcoded in the registry of DELL OEM Vista versions. If you really want to make it say XPS then just edit the Model string value under HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\OEMInformation key in the registry ;) .

Try to use an Inspiron coupon against an XPS purchase, no dice. :(
