Would upgrading any component in a Dell laptop void the 1 year or 3 year basic extended warranty?
-
Major things like the cpu, or screen, or mobo would void ur warranty. But otherwise you can upgrade ram, hard drive, mini pci, cd rom drive w.o voiding ur warranty.

I got 2 different answers from Dell employees regarding this.
I had an online chat with a Dell rep who said if I wanted to install memory, I would need to 1) purchase it from Dell and 2) call them and have them talk me through the installation.
A sales rep in a Dell store said it was unnecessary. Of course, he could've been trying to make a sale.
Can someone clarify? Also, would cleaning the fan be a warranty no-no? Thanks! -
You can get any memory u want and it would be fine. Also installation is a breeze.
And no, cleaning your fans is not a warranty no-no. -
Switching memory is a piece of cake. I spose the best option would be to put the Dell memory back if they require it for servicing.
-
Not even. Unless they can prove that the new memory caused the damage, then they can't refuse to service your notebook even with aftermarket memory in there.
Memory and hard drives are 2 things that most manufacturers don't frown upon when consumers upgrade them. Anything else, and they'll start getting picky. -
That's good to know - thanks for the info. Memory & hard drives are the two things that are best bought on your own, for the best price/performance.

First thought. DO NOT CALL A CSR REP OR TALK TO ONE IN A KIOSK. They cannot answer your question because they are not trained on this. Some will though.
Second, your Dell is covered for anything except the hardware you changed and method changed.
If you change your MOBO...you will have to answer some questions, however, they will still inspect and may warranty your system.
Most important thing to remember...software cannot void your system. -

What about upgrading CPU yourself?
-
That's gonna pretty much void any warranty you have.
Voiding warranty?
