I am planning to buy a Vostro, which I would basicly use for working with MS Office, playing music and watching dvds - so no gaming.
I travel a lot, so portability is important for me.
As my budget is limited, I thought of going for Vostro 1000, which - to my best knowledge - would be fast enough for watching movies with Turion 64 X2 TL-56 and 1GB DDR2-533.
But concerning portability, do you think that it's worth buying 1400 just because it's smaller and lighter? Or would I make use of its C2D and GForce as well?
Thanks for your help and advice.

well i would consider the 1400 not only because its lighter but also because of intel chips. it has some extras over the 1000 also. its up to you.

I agree. The Vostro 1400/Insprion 1420 is a better choice for portability/mobility then the Vostro 1000 . You might find a smaller/lighter(12in) laptop in the Dell outlet which would be better suited for traveling.
Any dual core processor(AMD or Intel) will fit your needs. I advise against getting the 8400m GS(or any other dedicated card) since it will produce more heat and consume more power(less battery life) compared to the Integrated GPU like the x3100. -
The Vostro 1000 is the same as the Insprion 1501 in the review section, so I would look there to see what a reviewer had to say about the system in general. Anyway, I would go with the 1420 just because of it's size difference.

The 1400 is more durable too (see at the bottom of the chart "magnesium alloy chassis for added durability") as well as smaller and lighter.
Either will get the job done, and they're both good for the price. If you can afford it, I say get the 1400, but otherwise, the 1000 should be ok too.
Vostro 1000 or 1400??
