I'm looking for opinions on which of these notebooks to purchase. I like both because they are 13" form factor and both are nicely spec'd but the Vostro is cheaper when spec'd out. I can get both in red which is another plus. I can't find much info on the Vostro 1320 here on the forums and I do know that there are some heat issues with the XPS 13 that seem to be alleviated through updates. Any opinions on these models.

No opinions yet. I will be using this laptop for email, web browsing, and an occasional game of defense grid. I'll also be bringing it with me back and forth to work and using it on my couch and bed with a lapdesk.

For the price, I'd go with the Vostro. I'm assuming defense grid isn't graphically intensive, so the Vostro should just be fine.

The Studio XPS is for you, if you want to have a slick and stylish looking notebook.
If you dont care a lot for looks, get the vostro.

Also the 1340 is nicely built, and has a backlight keyboard.
I dont know about the vostro.

My Vostro 1500 however looked like a brick, but was actually a very good notebook, that was 2 years ago however.

    Cheers.

Well I personally think that the Studio XPS 13 is a little overpriced but does have the better graphics and backlit keyboard. The Vostro seems to not be a looker but it seems to have a better bang for your buck. Man this is tough!

since i own a studio xps 13, i can tell you that the updates don't guarantee a resolution of heating problems. in my case, i've had to get the mobo + heatsink + fan replaced twice to solve it.

since you'll be hardly be playing any heavy games, vostro 1320 sure is better bang for your buck.

I went ahead and went for the Studio XPS 13. The deal breaker for me came down to the backlit keyboard and I would rather the 9 cell prop up the notebook than hang out the back. I am going to replace the thermal grease as soon as I get it to help with the cooling because the factory installed grease is not very good. Also, having the 9 cell should help with it being able to breathe more and when needed I have a Zalman Notebook Cooler. Also, I never use a laptop directly on my lap unless absolutely necessary. I always have some kind of barrier like a lapdesk when I am at home.

Thanks to all for the opinions.
