    Hi,

I ordered my Vostro 1400 the other night and it's currently at the pre-production stage.

Got it with wxga+ w/ trulife following a recommendation on here & 128mb graphics..

Is it worth calling dell and amending to the wxga standard, based on the apparent problems with the wxga+ screens? Or should I wait until it arrives (3 weeks) and see what my screen is like?

What do people think? I'm not really to bothered about how long it takes, i'm in no rush, I would just like to get a good quality laptop that works :)

    Cheers,

    Alex

Personally, I think WXGA resolution is just too low on a 14.1" screen. I wouldn't even consider anything less than WXGA+, so stepping back to a lower resolution screen for fear of possible "graininess" wouldn't be an option in my case. This is entirely subjective, so you may not miss the extra resolution at all.

I got an SEC WXGA+ screen in my Vostro 1400, and it's really not too bad. I thought I saw some "graininess" at first, but I'm really not so sure anymore. I'm starting to think that perhaps it's more psychosomatic than anything - people get on here and read about everyone's "grainy" WXGA+ screens, and they suddenly begin to notice some imperfections in their own displays - I'm under the impression that this is what led me to question the quality of mine. If you read about screen graininess before receiving your notebook, you're ready to pick the screen apart under a microscope as soon as you open the box. This isn't to say that people aren't getting grainy low-quality screens. I'm sure some of them are terrible, but others are perfectly acceptable.

I'll probably be sending mine back for the loose battery issue. I have a hard time understanding how they could release a new laptop from production with a loose fitting battery, and I've never in my life used a notebook that had anything less than a solid and rattle-free battery. My worry is that the one they swap it out for will have a well-fitting battery but a horrible screen.

I think that's a really good point actually capntang.. If you know about the faults beforehand you will go looking for them, and generally will find them as your mind makes it all seem worse..

I think i'll wait and see.. then compare it to my current D505.. if it looks better and works better and does the job it's supposed to.. i'm a happy customer :D

Maybe it's just my screen, but I have come to believe that most people on this forum are just extremely picky when it comes to nearly everything. I have an SEC screen on my Vostro 1400, and it's just plain gorgeous in every conceivable way. The backlight bleeding that all these screens have is seriously hardly even an issue, and my screen has nothing that could even begin to be described as "graininess." I adore the sharper resolution and the extra real estate it brings.

There is seriously so much right about this laptop that the tiny problems seem so ridiculously insignificant that I don't even consider them to be an issue. The wobbly battery is indeed VERY wobbly on mine, but it doesn't really bug me. I may employ some electrical tape, as some have suggested, to help remedy the issue, or I may just live with it, as I hardly ever even notice it.

As for the screen, there is almost nothing wrong with it. Just let the laptop ship and don't look back!
