I have been e-mailing Customer Service Rep back and forth and finally got an answer about the delay on my system the Vostro 1400.

I have this quote from their reply :

I checked the details and found that the part# WY106 for Ownership Guide is back ordered which is causing delay of the order.

I request you to contact Sales at 1800-284-3355 Ext 72-67613 so that they can replace the part# with the available similar part and expedite the order.

I have not called sales yet because they are closed now.

Please see my order status in my signature.

Anyone else is having delays with the Vostro 1400?

Ok, I called the Sales Rep and she said the delay is not due to the Ownership Guide which would be a silly reason not ship it. But it is due to the graphic card 8400 128MB being on back order.

She told me that the only way to expedite my order is if I switch to Vostro 1500 with the 8600 256MB card.

The delay might be in access of 10 days.

Man, you have to do your own investigation to determine the source of delay.

I am sticking to the Vostro 1400 for portability, but I have to be patient.

Now I noticed that it shows a 4 day-delay when you order Vostro 1400 with the 8400 128MB card online.

It never showed the delay when I ordered it.

Dell might not have been aware of the delay at the time of your order, but by the time you moved into the build stage, it might have been in effect.

Yeah this is what I figure happened.

I was trying to avoid delays when I ordered by upgrading the screen to WXGA+, since there was a delay on the XGA. Now there is no delays on the screen but there is one on the video card.

When ordering online at Dell, there is a timing error that might occur (factory vs online order).

    So I do not trust:
    1. Which part is on backorder
    2. Shipping date

Ordering online and the factory should be more in sync than right now at Dell.

I checked the phone today and now it is in the boxing stage. :) Not too exciting but a progress nonetheless.

It has been in the build stage since 12/5/07.

Better now. It was shipped today and the new EDD is 12/18. That would be beating the original EDD by 3 days. Total time from order to delivery would be 13 days (not spectacular but acceptable).

Just wondering when was your exact date of order. Mine was on 12/5.

It looks like we have the exact specs except for the screen, as I have the WXGA+.

Boy there are a few Vostro owners. It seems as if the Vostro is the red headed step child. :(

I placed an order for a 1400 today, and the site indicated a ship date of 1/17. After I finalized my purchase I received an e-mail stating my laptop would not ship until 1/23. The site did not indicate my chosen configuration would result in a delay. I called Dell and was transfered to a rep in India who stated my laptop was on backorder or that some component was on back order, although she could not tell me what specifically. This was my first purchase with Dell, and I am not pleased so far. Whats odd is that I chose the Nvidia 8400 for my system, I went back to the site and configured another 1400 but this time I chose the Intel integrated graphics. The site indicated a delay due to me choosing this option. Weird.

Our order for the 1400 with the Intel graphics card was placed on 1-9 with an original est. ship date of 1-16. That date was bumped back a full week on the next estimate (to around the 23-25) when the actual order was acknowledged. It actually shipped on the 12th and according to it's tracking number should arrive on 1-16. I think they allow themselves a good cushion when giving the final estimate. Hang in there and watch the invoice/tracking info daily.

Looks like you were right, it shipped today according to Dell and will be delivered on 1/18.
