I've got a Vostro 1400 here and I find the touch pad quiet annoying compared to the Inspiron 6400 I have, it appears that Dell has switched to a different company for touch pads (Alps Inc instead of Synaptics), so I want to know what everyone thinks of this touch pad on the Vostro 1400.

Also, I got the Vostro 1500 also here it appears to have a Synaptics touch pad so what I want to know is whether there is a chance of getting a Synaptics touchpad on the Vostro 1400 if I get Dell to replace it.

So pretty much, all I want to know is that if you find the touch pad on the Vostro 1400 annoying and what brand is your touch pad?

I have an Alps touchepad in my Sony Vaio now, but i use to have a HP Pavillion zd7000 with a Synaptics touchpad. The Alps works reasonably well, but is no match for my old Synaptics i think. The Synaptics was so much more responsive, and i preferred the smooth surface of it to. I don't think Dell offers the option to change it for you, and i think you'd have a hard time finding one that will fit in the machine. It's worth the try though in my opinion.

Yeah my 1400 has an Alps. Not too happy with it as it sometimes doesn't register movements properly, and occasionally gets stuck in a mode (click stuck on, etc).

I don't like touchpads anyway, hence I carry around a mouse 95% of the time.

It could not be any worse than the one the HP 2500t I have.

Not only is it a crappy alps, but the surface itself is horrible.
I dont mind if it alps or synaptics, as long as it works...

It is a crappy oddly shaped ALPS. Far worse than the synaptics that the 640m, 1501 etc had.
