Hi i'm new. I found this site while looking for a Vostro 1400 review and hey I bought one!

So recently windows update recommended to me that I update the webcam drivers to version 1.06.something (i can't remember exactly). So I did. The drivers didn't work out exactly and caused slow downs. So I went ahead and uninstalled it with plans to install the one from the packaged driver CD. The driver R155105 unpacks and starts the setup.exe. The setup proceeds but when the progress bar reaches around %80-%90 Windows says it has found a driver already and the setup says it encounters an error, Then asks me if I wish to restart. I do so, but still nothing works. The device Windows installed is called "Unknown Driver" and it won't let me do a manual override with the dell drivers. So in hopes of saving my webcam, I reinstall Vista Business. I install all the drivers in the order dell's e-manual describes. When I finally get to the webcam driver, it gives me the same error.

So I'm stuck with a fresh install of Vista Business (I had everything perfectly setup before too!) and a web cam that doesn't work. I'm trying to look for that update windows offered me. Maybe it would work, maybe not but it is better than nothing i guess. I will be calling up Dell on monday about this, I'll see what they can do :)

I know a few of you have encountered this problem in XP but what about Vista?
Also, is there a default Windows webcam driver for vista?

Try and check Dells website and see if there is a newer version of the webcam driver that you can get from there. Otherwise uninstall the webcam driver and then restart windows before installing the new driver if you didn't do that before.

I don't believe that Windows Vista would have the required driver for the webcam built in.

I've tried all that, the problem is that the driver never finishes installing, it hits an error than aborts. Then windows "installs" a weird driver for "Unknown Device" that has non-existent files.
Dell doesn't have a newer driver, it's the same as the one on the ResourceCD. I know I got a "newer" one through Windows Update in Vista but I can't find it anymore. I believe the installer for the driver is faulty.
