Ok, the Dell site lists that the Vostro 1400 has consumer IR (infrared sensor), however I cannot find the infrared port anywhere.
I looked all through the manual, doesn't show it anywhere (mentioned to look in the BIOS when installing drivers for it - nothing there either).. Nothing is listed in device manager and I cannot find any settings in the BIOS either...
Has anyone found this on the Vostro 1400 or equivalent Inspiron?
-
Its to the right of the Mic input on the front of the laptop
-
Shouldn't it show in Device Manager or Control Panel? How do I get it to actually connect with an infrared device or use it a receiver for a Media Center remote?
-
Hmm, well I don't know. It looks like it should be there
-
Where can I get the express card remote? I heard it was only $15.
-
*bump* i would like to know too where i can get a remote for my vostro 1500.
-
Did you get it working? I am getting "COM port not found" (translated from swedish) when I try to sync my Polar pulse watch. I triple checked the IrDA thing with DELL before buying because I do NOT want to connect a separate USB-thingy.
-
Ebay, I got one for my Inspiron for $10 shipped.
-
Hmm... I am trying to sync my Polar pulse watch and am not after a remote control. It seems the application I am using does not think it can find an IR port.
-
it's consumer IR port rather than regular IR port.
-
Yeah, basically it's not a COM port, just a extra peripheral to let you use the Dell IR remote to control multimedia functions. Also, if you didn't buy the remote at the time of purchasing the Vostro, you will not have the IR sensor anyway. This bummed me out too, oh well, once my wife gets a new cell phone, I'll have no use for an IR port anyway!
-
Does this mean it can only be used with the Dell Remote? I searched all over to try to get it working with my phone, but couldn't find it in Control Panel, BIOS, or downloadable drivers (this was back when I still had XP). I know it's not the phone, either - it works fine with the infrared port on my ThinkPad 760.
Oh well, if I can get Bluetooth working with my phone again I won't need Infrared anymore anyways. -
yes. .

The Dell website says that the IR receiver on the Vostro 1400 will only communicate with the Dell Travel Remote. If the chip on the PCB board for the IR receiver is a drop-in chip, you might be able to find a different drop-in chip that will enable communication with any IR device, not just Dell's Travel Remote.

Funny you should say that, because when i look at it with an extreme good light i can see the IR sensor in there.
