    Hi there,

I got my Vostro-1400 last Monday afternoon and I have been realy pleased with it, but today I noticed that my harddrive is considerably loud. First I thought it was the fan, but since it isn't spinning and there isn't other fans (AFAIK), then I knew it was the harddrive. Anyone else noticed this ? I got the standard 160GB (says ST9160821AS in the "device-management"). I also noticed some "clicking" noises when IDLE, every second or so.
Before I call Dell on Monday I just wanna check with you guys if it's normal ?

    Thanks in advance.

There've been lots of complaints, but not too many like yours. :(

Seriously, someone should sticky the hdd clicking fix thread. A thread pops up pretty much every other day.

    Follow the instructions here: http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=168425

If it sounds like a loud fan then it can be the DVD, it is quite loud. Some HDD have been noisy but not very loud like a fan.

I have seen those threads, but I neither of them describes a problem with a loud HDD in general use.

Could be, but since I don't have a disc in the drive, I assume that's not the noise source. Plus I can clearly hear the sound coming from the hdd compartment.

I never claimed it would fix a hard-drive that loud. Only the clicking-sound when idle, which you claimed occurred.

Hey Mathias, I also similar issues with my Vostro 1400. I have the seagate ST9120822AS HDD. It makes a low fan-like noise that doesn't ever stop.

From my experience, Hitachi HD makes the most noise. Seagate and WD are fine. WD maybe the least noise maker. I have Seagat 160/5400. It made louder noise compare to my WD 80GB, but much less noise compare to replacement unit which has Hitachi HD. Also, it seems quiet down quite a bit now. Maybe Vista keeps indexing when it's new? Or it's "break-in" already?
