Can anyone who has recently received a Vostro 1400 please quote the model number (e.g. SEC4457) of their LCD please?

I would like to know if Dell are still shipping out faulty screens or whether the problem is fixed now as I am being told by reps RE my system.

I got the crappy AUO screen (got it last week) I gues I should call dell and pitch a fit about it, but I haven't really got the time, nor can I really send my laptop in for service, with exam period coming up and all. It's not quite as bad as some other peoples, but still noticably grainy and with a nice darker spot on the lower portion of the screen.

Can you look closely at your LCD while showing different colours and see if it has feint horizontal lines?

    Thanks

Actually yes it does have those faint horizontal lines. But I can only see it when the screen is pushed back quite a bit so that it isnt directly facing my head. Should i ask for a replacement screen?

That's up to you of course...and that's what I am asking myself now. I already got a bad deal price wise from Dell, I had a bad screen replaced with a worse screen and now back to a mediocre screen and on top of that my webcam and microphone had to be replaced as they just died on me. Overall not a happy dell customer and certainly wont be using them again, particularly not for this line of machines.

I'm very much a perfectionist and on top of that I use my laptop for a lot of graphics work as a multimedia student (and as a student I watch a lot of movies etc lol) but aside from that I don't think I should haver to settle for anything less than a good LCD.

(I also have the headphone jack noise which is another pain in the ass from Dell)

Well updating you graphics drivers might help alot and for me it isnt much of an issue as i always have the screen so it faces me directly. I myself have the CPU whine and want either my mobo or processor replaced. I also want my Hard drive replaced as it produces a ticking noise.

So all in all what we have established here is that Dell are **** beyond belief.

    Hmm.

Oh and i forgot to mention that the battery is wobbly and that when I was told that my other order was cancelled, I was still charged for it, along with intrest. So that meant another 3 hours of calling them up. Then they told me a replacemnt battery would be sent that i could keep, until the delivery arrvied and he wanted the old battery in exchange for the new one. Well im still pleased with my laptop but i still want those problems sorted so that it can become the perfect laptop.

I have just sent my rep a slightly annoyed email explaining the situation again. I am unable to take calls from them during their working hours (not to say I like talking to them anyway....i find it annoying talking to a rep who knows less about the computer and its problems then I do).

Its just so aggravating...especially with dark colours the angles are terrible (vertical and horizontal).

Ok, so get this if you want a short story to read about Dell.

I have a Vostro 1400. First thing, I received the laptop and it had an AUO screen. Horrible grain! I had a replacement screen sent to me (refurbished). The replacement was an SEC4457. I put it in the laptop, only broke one tab on the bezel. I thought the screen was perfect even though it was a refurb. Then I saw the lines. Mine are on a black background only. There are two that are very noticeable and theyre thick and run vertical and are only seen from a slight angle to the left when the laptop is away from your face on a black background. Also, there is very very very faint ones that run vertical and there is thousands of them. These can be seen again, only on a black background but when the laptop is at a direct on view. Almost uneven backlighting but not really bleed.

So, Dell sends me yet another replacement SEC screen. Wrong resolution! 1280x800! So I tell them I shouldnt have to be replacing screens left and right with refurbished products. So they send me a replacement laptop. Only to my luck, again the same AUO screen! I sent that one back.

Now, Im still stuck with the original laptop with the first replacement SEC screen. Id really be jumping that class action boat. (Flame my post if you want) But, Ive given up on my own merit in trying to deal with this situation as Dell has outlasted me. :(

So, needless to say, I did like to have a solid black background on my laptop, especially when Im working with files on the "desktop" screen. Ill have to have a wallpaper up so the lines don't bother me. Sacrifices need to be made, because the design of this laptop is seriously awesome.
