So I posted this same thread on the HP forum and results were unanimous:

Ok, same specs aside. Same cpu, mem, hardrive, etc. Which would you prefer? The Vostro 1400 with 128mb dedicated 8400m gs or the HP dv2500t 64mb dedicated 8400m gs WITH HDMI. I guess this is rather objective. I do plan to game some with it and also I do plan to jack it up to the tv every once in awhile.

    Other factors to consider:
1.) HP ship time is faster
2.) HP screens only have 1280x800 res
3.) HP screens arent grainy like the dell.
4.) Build quality: Dell is magnesium alloy.

*Biggest factor though to me is the 64mb less of graphics memory. 3dmark scores tend to be 500 pts less on the HP.

    HP dv2500t: ( http://forum.notebookreview.com/show...dv2500t+review)

*Do you guys n gals think 64mb dedicated memory (500 3dmark pts) is worth an hdmi plug.

    People, STOP double posting.

Edit: Sorry, it's the fifth one today and I'm getting a little agitated.

Okok, sorry, I thought it would be interesting to see what ppl in the Dell forum would think about this. Perhaps the opinions would have completely been opposite...

Test to see which looks better through your TV, HDMI or VGA. Sounds stupid - I know, but....

On my current TV (A bravia) The difference between the two is negligible.

On my Previous LCD TV, VGA looked miles better than HDMI (Poor port I presume)

I wouldn't buy a computer just because it had one port over another (especially when the difference can be so small) , but if the laptop is sleeker overall, and the build time really is a factor, go HP. I ordered a Vostro, and have had to wait a month for it, but now it's finally shipped I'm glad I waited because I got exactly what I wanted - with no compromises. If I'd been a bit more impatient and cancelled the order I'd be typing right now on a laptop without all the features I wanted.

Not sure what the 64 mb card might do to games - the 128mb in my Vostro is pretty much the minimum required for most year-old to brand-new games...

Build quality is most important for a laptop. My HP DV4000 started some problem after 6 months and became partly functional right after warranty expired. As I need to carry it to work, the plastic case is too flexible and does not hold up. Even worse, it traps more heat. The heat and flexible case caused some parts to come loose on the motherboard that i have to apply pressure at certain place to keep it running. In addition, the USB ports are dead half of the time because of that. Now HP put a piece of metal on the keyboard side, that helps to disperse heat and add some support.
The screen on Dell is a matter of luck. Mine 1400 with SEC4457 SWGA+ is not grainy at all and looks better than the one on my HP.
