The Vostro 1500 configured with a 8600M GT (or heck even with the 8400GS) sounds like a really good deal.

What's the catch? Is it a really bad LCD? Are they underclocking the vid? I note that it costs a lot to upgrade the CPU... In order to keep a friend of mine in budget we'd have to go with the 1.6 dual core rather than any higher, unless we wanted to do with the 8400GS and get a faster CPU. Still, how do they do it?

I've been leading him towards ASUS before, because of their build equality etc. there's no way we could get an ASUS with those specs for that price.

I think the catch is that dell laptops (save for xps) look horrible. But as far price goes, they can't be beat.

But seriously, dell laptops look horrible. So bad, in fact, that whoever is responsible for designing them should be taken outside and . . . .

Alright, "Martha"... in Ms. Stewart's opinion, the vostro is unpleasing to the eye... i really think it looks sharp- simple, but sharp. Its a great laptop for the price, and if all you want is a great laptop... buy it!

That is your opinion. A laptop wont be cheaper because it has a half-ass design. I think the refresh design is really nice, simple and sharp. The vostro is also very nice. An ugly laptop doesn't necessarily mean cheaper price unless it's made from card board.
