I am someone new to laptops. Only been looking around the last few days as I will need one in January. I posted in the what to buy forum and was told a Vostro 1500 was right up my ally. Now I went to Dell and I can configure it for about 1100 which is great too. But when it comes to the screen I need some help.

    Can someone:

    1. Sum up what the problem is that people are having? I do not really understand "grainy". would this make games and use un bearable or something.

    2. Is there a screen option I should pick to avoid it? It seems like some get it and others don't.

    3. do the Inspiron 1520s have the same problem. It seems they are pretty close to the same computer.

Thanks in advance for any help. I really want to get the Vostro, but I am hesitant with the issues I have seen on these forums.

The whole grainy screen "problem" is hit or miss. I've seen some pictures that have it clearly, and other pictures from people claiming to have it that are perfectly fine. I honestly think its a problem with a small percentage, and you really shouldn't worry about it.

The 1500 and 1520 use the same parts. Configure both systems for what you want, and see which one is cheaper. Usually the inspiron is only cheaper on $1500+ configurations.

    I got my vostro with 1.6 Ghz / wxga+ (no graininess, AUO panel) / 8600m GT / 120 GB hd / DVD-R / 1 GB RAM for $749.

There is a better deal now that will give you the same configuration, but with 2 GB RAM, for the same price.
