This is kind of a silly question, but it's about the aesthetics.

I can see the kg weight, but this being my first laptop I've owned myself I was interested in the weight and feel.

Is it noticably a bulky, economically-looking laptop? Does it feel a little like a cheap brick?

Or is it heavy but well built?

Just after opinions - dell don't do them it seems :D

Well, Dell ,obviously, will have only one opinion (that their product is the best)
and most of the guys(and gals?) who have got their vostros seem to confirm this by saying that, although, it is heavy, it is quite sturdy.

Why dont you search the forums for more on this? look for "vostro review"

It is sturdy and looks very good (classic, basic black). It is, however, extremely bulky, and not too much smaller than a 17" dtr.

Thats the reason i opted for the Vostro 1400. It still has discrete graphics while being light and fairly thin, which will please my sister.

The 1400 is about 5 pounds, and compared to my old Compaq, from 2003 (15 inch, and 8 pounds).

I don't think you will be...plagued by any weight issues
