I receiveid my Vostro 1500 today and have been all excited to test the performance. One thing that dissapoint me is the constant ticking sound from the harddisk when it's idle. It sounds like a clock, it's not loud, but a little bit annoying. Does anyone else have this same problem?

Second thing that I have to complain about is the screen that is a little bit grainy. Looks like there is a dust layer over the screen. Does anyone know if there some way to fix this?

I also have a little bit backlight bleeding on the bottom of my screen, but it is not so bad. I got the 15.4" WXGA True Life screen (1280x800). I was a little bit suprised how big the icons were, but this could easily be adjusted in the appearance properties. In second thought I would choose the WXGA+ if I would place a new order.

I didn't like the soft touch of the touchpad buttons, but I guess you can get used to that.

The ticking sound can be either normal or not normal (depending on the HDD model)
Check the hard-drive model (using the device manager) and tell us about it.

But I don't think much can be done about the screen...

It sounds like there is a lot you are disappointed about. Why don't you return the laptop? Seriously, if there were that many things bothering me, I would.

Isn't the ticking just Vista indexing your HDD?

    Should go after a while.

Indexing is a service running in the background to accelerate the searching.
Though after it's done the initial indexing, all it has to do is to keep track of the new changes.

Yes, it's common to forget to mention the good things. :) Actually I'm very satisfied with my Vostro 1500. It's very fast and runs cool. It has a professional look and feels sturdy. The webcam is also very good and has nice features. The battery does not wobble at all on my laptop. I will add some pictures later on.

Ps. I think I got wrong sticker on my laptop. It says Intel Centrino Duo even though I have Intel Core 2 Due inside. I don't know if that's the same? It scared my at first sight until I checked the system properties. :)

Centrino Duo is the combination of Core 2 Duo CPU, Chipset and specific Wireless chip. It's a marketing thing.

Mine has the same, I think it's gone now - Vista indexing some things.

    Yep, exactly the same thing.

They are rubbish aren't they, but you do get used to them.

If the icons look to big in vista, to make them smaller, all you need to do is put your cursor on the desktop, and scroll the mouse wheel. When i tried Vista on my M70(which also has a 1280x800 display) i also though the icons looked WAY to big. I dialed them back 2 or 3 times so they were about equal to the default XP size.

you have a lg phillips screen.. and im suprised it looks that way.. i have 2 units here one leaving tomm one is a cpt and one is a auo.. the cpt i would have loved to have kept but the light bleed is BAD one of the worst i have seen in a long time i mean you can almost see the full line of light under/behind the lcd..

the auo has almost no bleed at all .. much better viewing angle then the cpt but my god the colors are aweful... white are yellowish blue.. etc.. and adjusting the setting does nothing to fix this.. i ran color pro on the auo today and i could not get it to anywhere in the acceptable area..

i was hoping for a lg screen now i dont know what im gonna do...

My screen is not that bad after using for a while. I can live with the little back light bleed it has. I'm not going to send it back. Sorry to hear about your screens. I hope you get a replacement screen that works.

This laptop has been downright amazing for me. The hissing with the earphones is really getting to me though.
