    Hello,

Im either getting a Vostro 1500 or a Vostro 1510. Im getting the Vostro because of the XP (if not it would be the inspiron 1520).

    My basics are :
    Intel® Core™ 2 Duo T5670 (1.8GHz, 2MB L2 Cache, 800MHz FSB)
2GB Shared Dual Channel DDR2 SDRAM at 667MHz, 2 DIMM
160GB 7200RPM SATA Hard Drive with Free Fall Sensor

However the problem with the 1510 , is that it has integrated video, I would have to pay an additional $150 for the 8600.
The 1510 should be lighter than the 1500, has a new look (less fingerprint smudges) and its a brand new model.

My laptop is intended for office and home use. No gaming or DVDs.

Or should I get the Inspiron 1520????

thanks to all who can help.
    best,

If gaming is never a concern then integrated graphic card will perform well for your needs. Looks like you have some room in your budget, I recommend that, if possible, try investing that mnoey in a faster CPU which will help with words, emails, web surfing speed although not completely necessary. Otherwise, if you are on a budget, then the system is fine the way it is, I have T5470 CPU @ 1.6 and it performs well for daily tasks.

As Pai said, if you don't see yourself ever needing the dedicated card, then don't get it.

    I have a vostro 1500. :)

Keep the CPU if budget is not a concern and honestly, don't get ram from OEMs like Dell, they are extremely overpriced. If you don't mind DIY a bit, then Nizzy has a very informative Step by step guide on how you can upgrade your own ram. Just pick up a set of cheaper rams off newegg.

Edit: I personally upgraded my own RAM, and it wasn't hard at all, I was being very careful and it only took me 30 minutes.

    So the Vostro it is.
1500 or should I make the upograde to the 1510. At the end it should be quite similar. Lighter (and with a gloss surface finish)

I would take the 1510 over the 1500 for office use.

How much RAM does the integrated video consume? If I later upgrade to Vista will the integrated card hold?

The integrated graphics takes a bit of memory from the system ram to function. It will work perfectly fine with Vista Aero. It is more than powerful enough.

Wow, so I guess the 1510 is already available now.

$150 to upgrade to 8400M GS?! That's insane! So I guess they're really not going to offer the 8600M GT outside the XPS line anymore?

As they've mentioned, no gaming and purely office use = IGP will do. I'd think the 1510 is a better option since it seems lighter and sleeker than the 1500. It doesn't seem that much expensive either, although you might want to do your own price comparison between same specced machines.

EDIT: From what you've posted above, it seems that the 1510 is indeed the best choice. Better screen, and specs that fits your needs best. I'd say go for the 1510 :)
