Just got my Dell Vostro 1500 today.
Black, sturdy, no extra frills, perfect. My kind of notebook.
Anyways, after playing around with Vista for a while, I decided to go back to good old Windows XP.
After installation and installing drivers, I got an error.
The error occurs after I reboot the computer.
This message shows up:
" The AC power adapter wattage and type cannot be determined.
The battery may not charge.
The system will adjust the performance to match the power available.
Please connect a Dell 65W AC adapter or greater for best system performance.
To resolve this issue, try to reseat the power adapter."
So I reset the power adapter, still doesn't work.
The adapter seems to be able to power up the notebook, but fails to charge the battery.
Don't know what's going on, any help is greatly appreciated!
The power adapter is 90W.

Nevermind, fix it...
The little pin inside the adapter connector was bent, had to straighten it out.
Now working fine -
i dont know if that is the problem, but most of the time just unplug and plug it back in and it works fine.

Having the same problem with Vostro 1500 and Windows XP. It's not a "real" problem though as, if you remove the battery, the laptop still runs happily from the AC adapter. This indicates that the adapter is working fine.
You can stop the spurious "Warning" from appearing by altering the BIOS setting as follows:
1) Restart computer and press F2 key at boot-up to enter the BIOS screen.
2) Go down to "Post Behaviour->Adapter Warnings"
3) Press the Enter key and the (default) Enabled will light up green.
4) Use left arrow key to select OFF and press Enter.
5) Press Esc key and select Save & Reboot.
That will kill the annoying warning screen. -
I had the same problem with my Vostro 1500 - I fixed it by reflashing the BIOS
