What effect does the following have on the battery life of the Vostro 1500 (9cell).

    WSXGA+
    8600GT
    7200rpm HD

I'm looking for a notebook that can play games, but has good battery life too. So I don't know if I should go for 7200rpm + 8600GT or 5400rpm + 8400GM...

    Thanks,
    T

    Well...
    I have a Vostro 1500, with 9 cell battery, a WXGA True-Life screen, a 160 GB (5400 rpm) HDD and nVidia Geforce 8600M GT (256 MB).

I have the 5400 rpm HDD, but I would advice you to take the 7200 rpm HDD, expecially if you want to play games on your Vostro. The Vostro is great for playing games, but I think that it is the slower HDD that makes some newer games run a little less smoothly...

Well... I can can work on my Vostro for almost 5 hours while playing music and surfing the internet (on battery only).

I have a 1520 with a 9-cell battery (specs in sig) and I can easily get over 3 hours battery life on a battery saving power setting while using the battery. If I tried harder and changed some settings, I could definitely get more.

Fujistu 5400 RPM, 8600GT, 5-7.3 hour estimate (depends on activity). (never actually used it down)

    9 cell
    linux power kernel optimizations.

the inspiron 1520 can really get good battery life.

looking @ seagate's data sheets, the 7200 RPM drive will use .3 watt more average.

to figure the power requirements/battery life:

9 cell battery has 85 watthr. my system uses ~12 watts at lowest brightness, linux and windows. so, if you add .3 watts, the power is 12.3

to calculate how many hours, 85 watthours/watts = hours.

I get around 3 hours on my setup ... which is with the 5400 drive and 6 cell. It would be more but I never run on the battery - I use it for a ups.
