So I ordered a Vostro 1500 on the 30th and added the bluetooth module in the notebook. Everything was fine. i just got done monkeying around on dell today and was seeing what dell would have charged me for the upgrades I plan on making. Any how, when I chose the bluetooth again it said it was incompatible and required me to have Vista (I ordered mine with XP)

Is this going to be a problem?

    Thanks

free stuff time! If they didn't include a compatability warning when you ordered (I guess it didn't as it actually allowed you to order) then you have strong footing.

They should seriously make this a competition on how much free stuff you can get from Dell..

I replied in the other thread about this issue as well. My Vostro 1500's Bluetooth works fine under XP Home...

My 1500 and 1400, both with Dell BT, work perfectly under XP PRO.

The bluetooth on my 1500 with Vista basic works perfectly. The bluetooth on my 9400 with Vista basic refused to work correctly, and if the opinons of a few Dell techs are to be relied upon, the problem was that it was shipped with an "XP" bluetooth card.

If you have problems with the bluetooth on your new system. try the steps found from the dell website (support.dell.com). just type 303833 in the search box in the upper right corner, and you will find some resolution. I can't post the exact link here as of this moment because the site is really slow, for now. =)

Hope this could be of any help.

I called dell about this problem, if thats what it is. here is the rundown that he gave me:

there are 2 different types of cards, vista cards and XP cards. im assuming that one is programmed to work with vista better and one is programmed to work with XP. if you order over the phone and specify that you want the XP card or the Vista card with the respective operating system, there will be no problem. however, if you choose to upgrade or downgrade, then the card has no guarantee of working.

at this point, they have made clear the warning on their website so if you DO happen to upgrade or downgrade, you have no hope other than to buy a new bluetooth module. they arent actually all that expensive, and also, im pretty sure you should be able to find some hacked toshiba drivers or some such thing and make it work. the issue with downgrading was only that the radio was turned off, and they have a patch to turn it on, or like i said you could just downlaod hacked drivers. of course, if you upgrade then i have no idea what will happen.

right now im jsut wondering if i should use vista or XP. i mean vista has some really nice features compared to XP, and looks pretty nice too, but XP has good old reliability. i think i will go with vista just to keep things simple. plus, it can be a learning experience. if i need XP that bad, i can jsut revert to my campus computers until such time that i figure out the vista problem.

i had an issue not from downgrading to xp but from UPGRADING to VISTA ULTIMATE!
since it has been my habit to turn off the bluetooth radio when i am not using it, it seems that it stayed OFF even after the upgrade. thus, the OS was not able to detect and install a driver for it. and without the driver, there is no means of turning it on again as it is an application controlled device (more like a dead lock situation).
i downgraded to xp instead and still was not able to fix the problem. the issue only got resolved due to bug fix stated earlier in the thread. (forces the bluetooth module to turn on)
i'm using dell 355 internal bluetooth module by the way
