Well, I'm about to make a purchase between the Inspiron 1525, Vostro 1500, and the HP dv6700t for a special friend of mine. She doesn't game nor does she run any tedious programs.

As of now, I'm pretty sure the HP is out since I've read more issues (heat, fan, etc.) about it than the Inspiron. The Vostro might be the winner but I do have one question.

Is the headphone jack static/buzz noise still an issue with the more recent Vostro 1500's being sent out?

Yes, but there is now a fix available, only you'll have to dissemble the laptop to fix it. It doesn't cost anything, just a couple inches of electrical tape.

I've just received my 1500, and I've just played a game on it, with my iPod earbuds plugged in. I didn't notice any buzzing or strange noises, but if someone can tell me how to replicate the problem, I'll try.

With ref to MrBigglesworth's method I fixed the noise!(digital morse code, crackle sound), without a complete dismantle:

I tried unscrewing that case screw several turns, the one just below the headphone jack socket, and when I pressed up on that screw the noise did go away. I then followed the rest of MrBigglesworth's instructions and lifted the lid a bit (10-15mm) and bent the small metal flap just above the headphone jack socket up 8-10mm with a small electrical screw driver with tape wrapped around it's shaft as to not damage the case lid, and it solved the problem completely. many thanks MrBigglesworth

This might not work for everyone but it worked perfectly for me. My headphone jack is not picking up any interference (digital morse code, crackles) noise anymore.

Personally I have to say the noise is not that bad. There is also another work around. Since laptop headphone output is quite loud (almost as if it is made for speakers) just buy a external volume controller and lower the volume less then what you have it set to on your laptop. It works for quite a few people.
