Whenever I play Team Fortress 2 people say my microphone isn't working properly and the sound gets messed up. Whenever I go into the settings and test microphone it sounds fine to me but apparently not over the server.

I'm fairly certain Steam is defaulting to Digital Microphone instead of just microphone and when I test voice through steam it's all bad. A little bit better when I force it to be microphone but still not ideal.

I know the onboard sound on the Vostro has had its share of complaints, but like I said, it sounds fine on my comp in TF2 but not Steam. I'm kinda at a loss.

Has anyone encountered this problem or found a solution?

When you plug in your mic (I assume a headset of some kind) open the Windows Mixer and see what it's set to (should be Mic). Open Steam and see if it changes the mixer's selection.

I've encountered this same problem trying to use my on-board microphone in Counter Strike: Source.

Interesting, I've been playing TF2 and nobody has said anything about my mics sounding bad (using the digital microphones in the bezel).

I'm on a 1420 which has a similar audio layout it seems like. Have you tried forcing Steam to use the internal mic and not just the "default"?
