    hi,
cant decide wether to get the
    15.4" Wide Screen WXGA (1280 x 800) Display with TrueLife™ or without
it only cost £10 with TrueLife but I have read some bad things about true life screen suh as graininess and colour bleeding.
Also what are the advantages of the truelife screen.
    Don't know what to do

well, the graininess is almost an issue of the past... the light bleed on the other hand is present but is not really something which should bother you much unless you will be using black as background during most part of your usage

I thought I might like a matte screen on a notebook, but I seen some at a conference last week, and I tell you the glossy screens were so much brighter, even in a very bright room with lots of windows. Someone had a Vostro 1500 and the screen was beautiful. I knew then I would rather go with glossy. For a desktop LCD screen, however, I definitely prefer non-glossy because they are a lot brighter (compared to a laptop LCD).

Does TrueLife mean the screen is glossy rather than Matte?

Yeah, I fudged up when I bought mine, and didn't read exactly what truelife meant....I was expecting a matte screen on my Vostro, not glossy. That said, I'm SO glad I ended up with the screen I did...All I can say is WOW. Great colour, super sharp...best oops I've made in a long time.

Totally a personal decission. Glossy really looks nice, but I don't like the reflections and therefore chose a matte screen.

I'm currently thinking of getting either a 1700 or a 1500. I'd rather have matte, I think, but they only seem to offer that in the lower resolutions. I'd want either 1680x1050 on the 1500 or 1920x1200 on the 1700 (that would be the reason to get the bigger one). I see that the Precision machines proudly talk of non-reflective anti-glare technology, but they are more expensive.

Am I missing something, or is non-TrueLife only available on lower resolutions?

Truelife screen is much more brighter but I would not recommend it for outdoor use

i second that - its really up to what YOU like

i chose glossy because the laptop is indoors under incandescent lighting 99% of the time - if you spend your time in bright environments (like outside) then you may want the matte (as itll prevent a lot of the glare from bright light sources - such as the sun)

in "darker" environments - i think the glossy screen does make the colors pop a bit - but thats something you wont notice as much in brighter environments...

What if you like high-resolution matte, though (like I do)? Then you're stuck, right?

^ who wants high resolution matte? lol - im just kidding

it appears that on the vostro line, the higher resolutions are limited to the glossy screens - youll probably have to look at a different line, unfortunately...

so, yeah, if you want to go with vostro - it looks like you are "stuck"...

Well, I'd rather have matte, but I'll probably just have to compromise, as the Vostro seems generally good price / performance etc.

I see that Precisions would be an option, and there might also be other options from other manufacturers, but in the price range I don't see much choice. Dell seem to generally have more high-res options than other manufacturers. The gloss craze seems to be across the board...

    Cheers...

p.s. I would've just stuck with capitalising the 'I' to match the 'YOU' above, but since that would just've been standard capitilisation, I feel the bold italics expressed my ponit appropriately ;)
