Hey guys, New to the forum. I've been reading for the past few days and decided to pull the trigger on a Vostro 1500 tonight. Mainly used for internet, downloading, and school.

I ordered it with no virus software hoping to find some decent free programs. I already read the thread about the best free virus programs but I have a few questions.

So is this all I need to be properly protected?

    1 - Virus program

    1 - Firewall

    1 - spyware program

    1 - adware program

Should I be covered pretty good with just these? Any help would be great and thanks to all for the great work in putting this site together!!

I use (all free and all great):

    Virus: Anti-Vir
Firewall: Comodo Pro (can block Adware/Spyware too as of v3.0)
Spyware/Adware: Spybot Search and Destroy + SpywareBlaster

Those are good, I use Avast! and Threatfire, both awesome both free! (threatfire is advanced enough that I could probably ditch avast and vice versa but together... you're very safe indeed :))

I use AVG Anti Virus, Windows Defender and my routers hardware firewall, and <touch wood> all seems well with that combination. It doesn't seem to soak up much of my cpu's power and on-line gaming is fine.

On my second pc I use AVG Anti Spyware in place of Windows Defender, that seems ok too. They also do a Rootkit Removal utility... I like AVG :)

Yeah, I've been reading that thread already. I was just wondering how much was too much. I want to have just the right amount of protection without programs interfering with each other if possible.

I've tried most of the free FW, AV, and AS. Some were OK, others not so.

Same for me and I have NEVER had any issues.

You just need to make sure that you keep them updated.

I use avast and threatfire cause they are both rated very highly (checkout the maximumPC article on AV) AND use the least system resources(a very small amount indeed).

All the listed combos here would work well though :p

Thanks a ton for the info guys. It will help a great deal. Should these two firewalls above be enough?

yes, unless you plan on purposely and routinely visiting the nets dingiest alleyways (which most people don't)
