Hi there,
I've just received my Vostro 1500, and I "downgraded" it from Vista Business to Windows XP Professional with SP2.
However, I'm having trouble with the following drivers:
Base System Device
Base System Device
Base System Device
Ethernet Controller
SM Bus Controller
PCI Device
NB The above list is how it looks in Device Manager. There are yellow question marks next to them.
The sound doesn't work, either.
I've downloaded all of the necessary drivers from the Dell Website, but to no avail. Does anyone have any ideas?

A little help here people...

Wow, you waited an entire 25 minutes before reposting and getting frustrated with people for not responding, LOL
Give it some time man...these forums are global..you might not get a response for another few hours....
In the meantime, here's a free bump for you... -
I had the same problem with a desktop and this is what I had to do IN THIS ORDER:
Install:
XP
XP Service Packs and Upgrades
Chipset drivers
Video drivers
NIC drivers Audio drivers
I found this info in a knowledgebase article and when I installed in THAT order, all the question marks went away in Device Manager. See if there's a similar document for the 1500.
I just got a 1500 with vista and I am starting to do the same thing with XP ....I"ll let you know if I get anywhere and you do the same.

just go to dell - support -drivers/soft - choose xp instead of vista...
not to say anything bad, but wouldn't u expect to find the drivers for ur laptop on manufacturer's web site, considering dell is one of the biggest companies...imho -
Big_V,
We ARE getting them from Dell's website. Even when we use Dell's drivers, we still have conflict's which is sad (on Dell's part).
Hitman, I'm getting the blue screen of death when starting my install of XP Pro. I hit F6 to install the SATA drivers and then get the BSD ...how did you get the SATA drivers working?
Thanks. -Tony -
install intel inf files first, can get those from intel.com,then direct x,then video card drivers then anything else u might have.... the only problem i had installing was the conexant modem, but google HSFhda_WinXP.
everything else came from the web site.... just use google for what u can't find, it's not that hard... in bios, turn the ATA option on, and then install xp -
base system devices might be camera, sd card slot, etc...

Big V,
So we must disable SATA to run XP? Is that true, because I'd hate to use a slower hard drive interace than what I paid good money for. SATA is one of two reasons I ordered the Vostro. That would suck!
I'm also unclear about inf files. When I run the XP install CD, I don't ever run across inf files. So how do we implement them?
Thanks! -Tony -
my bad, by inf files i just meant this : http://downloadcenter.intel.com/fil...XP+Professional&lang=eng&strOSs=44&submit=Go!
there were a couple of threads about ata vs ahcpi, and the users couldn't notice the difference -
You need to install the Ricoh drivers. These are for the SD card reader. If you don't, you'll see 3 unknown devices in device manger. You'll find them under the chipset menu.

Thanks everyone for your input; I hope Hitman is getting all this (the one who started the thread).
I called Dell and decided to return this Vostro 1500 and I'm getting an exact duplicate but with XP on it. I decided that I didn't want to waste hours and hours and hours trying to get all the drivers from all over the internet universe just to make the damn thing work with XP. So it'll be much easier to just mail it and get one back for the same price.
Whatta shame.
I did some research on XP verses Vista and XP runs apps faster than Vista! What are ppl thinking ordering Vista? Plus the O/S is 5 times the size, full of little used features which put huge loads on PC resources.
I also found out that my Vista version is 32 bit. LOL I thought the reason Vista was realeased was to make use of all the 64 bit PC's coming out. This is the Twilight Zone; what a waste.
