I just got my Vostro and wiped the HD. I partitioned the HD into 3. 1 - 100gb 1-40gb and 1- 3gb. I loaded Vista Business on the 100gb. I need to load xp onthe the 40gb. I tried to load the sata drivers but i get the BSOD every time. A little help would be greatly appreciated..:GEEK:

    Thanks

I'm just a newbie, but I've read that changing some setting in the BIOS from "AHCI" to "ATA" will allow to load XP without having an external floppy to load the Sata drivers. (a post by Commander Wolf)

How are you trying to load the sata drivers? Have you tried using nlite to create a windows disc that has the driver integrated? That is what I did on my 1400 when I installed XP and it worked just fine. (Well, mostly fine, after I buggered it up a little and forgot to make the CD actually be bootable :) )

Here is my experience for my Vostro 1500 with ACHI enabled:
1.when in windows vista, install intel matrix storage utitlity.
2.reboot and copy x:\Program Files\Intel\Intel Matrix Storage Manager\Driver to somewhere.
    3. Use nlite to slipstream the driver. ( http://www.nogodforme.com/HPDV6500T.htm)
    4. install Windows XP with new CD

    Note:
    1. slpstream the SATA driver from intel or Dell will cause BSOD.
    2. load the driver from floopy during installation also cause BSOD.

Before you check that back to ACHI, you have to install SATA ACHI driver on windows XP, otherwise it will cause BSOD.
But I am unable to install the intel matrix storage utitily with ATA enabled

I too have stuggled with getting XP on Vostro 1400. Up till 2:30 last night. Seem to have most drivers going except SATA. Currently set to ATA on BIOS level. I installed Intel 82801HEM/HBM SATA AHCI Controller. When I switch to AHCI in Bios I get BOD.

It runs in ATA mode but seems like after I partitioned drive to C/D/E with OS on C: boot time takes literally 3-5 minutes. Like it is dead. But eventually boots. Then I tried to run Kaspensky but failed. Downloaded trial McAfee but the scan of files runs at a SNAILS pace!!! Stopped that. At this point I am wondering if there is ANY way to load a more current/accurate driver onto a Vostro 1400 running Windows XP Pro.
Moral of this story. If you want XP Pro, order it installed with it!!! You may want to consider Lattitude D630.

I have to say that I had very few problems getting XP pro onto my 1400. I started off using nlite to add the sata driver from dell's website and that worked fine for me. After that I just found the various drivers, and the only thing that gave me a problem was the sound drivers, but reloading it a couple times cleared everything up.
The people who are getting the BSOD when loading the sata driver, what method are you using to load it?

Gloomster, can you tell me exactly what sata driver configuration are you using? It seems to me that if you have XP running it would be possible to update/change the driver. I have the driver on my vostro 1400 but when I was presented with the specific driver from the list I had no way to verify. Thank you for checking. :)

    The method I'm using is:

    AHCI setting in BIOS
    Boot to XP CD
Hit F6 to install other HD drivers
Installing Drivers from DELL's support page for XP
    Blue Screen of Death.
I've tried this for EVERY driver Dell includes in the download for XP.

Has anyone loaded XP while using AHCI in the BIOS?

This is ridiculous that Dells drivers do not work. Thank you Dell.
