the new Inspiron has the magnesium-alloy exterior and Strikezone. Not sure about the Mylar and 13k hrs testing but probably the same.

if used daily (like maybe 5-7 hours, then left on the rest of the time) , but treated carefully, how many years would you guys say a 1520 can last?

You mean physically? I would give it 5-6, at least. If it's built as well as some of their older models, and doesn't have any strange motherboard/overheating problems (like some of their other older models), then it should last quite a while. Of course it will be outdated by then, but should still be usable.

The Vostro is a rebadged Inspiron with a different color scheme. I'm not entirely sure about the mylar keyboard protector on the Inspiron but if I had to guess I'd say it's there. Images from the Dell manual:

Oh sweet, then i'm glad I got the 1520 because the 1500 is like $250 more expensive.

the strikezone thing is a joke

my inspiron has the strikezone label on the bottom, and when i was replacing the HDD, I looked in the hard drive bay and guess what? the only thing around the hard drive is air. (which means they could have made the notebook smaller, because the optical drive has air around it too) the hdd is screwed directly onto the base with some mounting posts extended from the base facing the inside.

maybe strikezone refers to something in the HDD?

it seems that the vosotro has a better-closing screen (no play when closed)

Same here, even without the coupon and using almost exact same config without a custom colour... maybe not $200 cheaper but a fair bit.

ezmecs, no shipping problems for me, came in 12 days (estimated 10).

A quick Google search indicated that Dell holds a patent on the technology and has used it in the Latitudes. Here is a description from something called IT Biz Australia: "The Strike Zone Hard Drive Protection system was designed and developed by Dell to protect your Latitude from damage and potential loss of important business data. Using a resonant vibration damper, Strike Zone helps absorb the shock, dispersing energy away from your hard drive in the event of accidental notebook drops and bumps." Beats me what this means.
