I am basically choosing between these two right now, both have basically same specs and price, I just need some overall feedback on which one is better, thanks.

I'd go for the vostro since it seems to ship earlier.

I am buying it from the Dell outlet btw so shipping times do not seem to be an issue

Well When I was looking at Dell before I remembered I have had two Dell Desktops and hated Them, or moreover the Company from Which they came.... Umm but I was looking into the Vostro 1500
and was going to spend about 1400 w/ upgrades but went with a Sager 2090 which is roughly the same price and I get much more for my mullah :D .

    But Dell Bashing Aside
There really are only a few things different
    AMD vs Intel
Vostro does not have AMD listed as an option, if you like or want an AMD you have to go with Inspiron

    Case Color
Vostro=Just Black Inspiron=More Choices If you want more colors again Inspiron

    Video Card.
Both have options for Intel GMA cards, I strongly advise against. the Vostro has two options 128 and 256 MB Nvidia cards The Intel has only the ATI RADEON® Xpress1270 HyperMemory Card which is not as good.

OS. Where it counts most ;)
Inspiron 20/21 only has options as far as i see for Vista
Vostro you can select WinXP Prof. or Home but i prefer Prof.

So if given those two choices I would get the
    Vostro 1500
because it potentially has a better Video Card and you can select WinXP.

But shop around becuase I am sure you can find other notebooks just as good. just as pricey... never buy any computer without serious consideration. Oh and upgrade your RAM as much as you can/can afford. You wont regret it.

how is the ATI Radeon Xpress 1150 256MB HyperMemory graphics card on the dell inspiron 1501

also are the screens on the vostro 1500 or inspiron 1520/21 glossy, as I prefer glossy to matte

sorry i dont know what i was thinking there
both have the options for 256mbs when i first looked i looked at the vostro 1500 which had intel GMA.... which i WOULD NOT GET

I would say eihter card is good ...

the 1150 is class 5 not as good http://www.notebookcheck.net/ATI-Radeon-Xpress-1150.2173.0.html
and the vostro's 8600 is signifigantly better class 2
    http://www.notebookcheck.net/NVIDIA-GeForce-8600M-GT.3986.0.html

so the vostro's definitely has the better Vid Card

the inspiron are glossy but not as nice
the vostro has true life which are glossy
    see:
    http://www.screentekinc.com/dell-truelife-lcd-screens.shtml

how much are you looking to spend, I mean I probably should have asked that before.. .depending on what you wanted to pay all-in-all options would be different...

But to me; the vostro still looks likme the better laptop to me...
