I had the repairman from Dell do some work on my vostro 1500 and he had to access the bios service menu to finish his job.
He used a set of key combinations (F5, F10 or F6) to get into the service menu in bios.
Here he had access to options which aren't available for the normal user.
I want to see if I can make some changes in bios which are usually available in other notebook bios from other manufacturers.
What really interests me is changing the memory FSB or timings...

Any tips on how to access the service menu?

Its a cd they use. I have one shhhh. ;) its for changing the service tag of the motherboard (when you replace it). And it wont be useful for what you are thinking, its just for data that normally you couldnt change (for warranty reasons)

Seeing as you're so proffessed with vostros and inspirions, I have a question...
How can I change my memory speed from 667Mhz to 800Mhz?

I've bought 4GB (2x2GB) OCZ SO-DIMM DDR2 PC2-6400 800Mhz RAM and I'd like to have it run at full speed... the Santa Rosa platform should support that...

My old asus switched automatically from 333Mhz to 400Mhz when I upgraded the RAM but the vostro hasn't done that... it's still at 667Mhz...

You cant. The motherboard chipset has a max frequency of 667 mhz. There is nothing you can do to make it run at 800mhz.

    Oh, thanks...or rather :( shame...
my vista index is 4,8 that's because of my memory :( everything else is above 5.1....

I've got another question, I have vista 32bit installed and it only uses 3582MB from the 4GB ram.

Can the graphic card use the unused ram seeing as it has access to extra ram when needed?

Or put another way, does the graphic card access the system ram (turbo cache) outside of the OS or does it only use what vista gives it?
