I accidentally clicked the power button on the start menu and it put my PC to sleep, however when I tried to wake it up the screen stayed black and I couldn't do anything except switch off main power and disconnect the battery to switch off.

Does anyone else have this problem or did I not do something correctly in waking up the laptop? Is there a fix for this? Is there a known driver issue affecting Vista sleep?

I had the same issue. About a month ago. Take the Dell Drivers disk and reinstall the Video Driver from that disk. Should be fine after that.
