I searched on the boards to see if someone else asked this and I couldn't find it, I hope I did a good search![]()
ok, I was looking at the vostro 1500, when I was doing some research for buying a new laptop, I saw the Asus G1S and had almost all the things that I wanted, not necessarily use it for games, but I can really use a strong graphics card. anyway, the Asus is about $1750 and when I put a similar configuration on the Vostro 1500 I got a price around $1400. I am always skeptical when things like this come around, why is the vostro so cheap compared to other similar machines? what is the catch?
Thanks

The vostro is cheaper because it is not as high quality as Asus. A dell latitude will be higher quality, but it will also cost more.

Dell is...unique. They arent known for amazing quality, but ppl receiving their 1520's (basically the same machine as the 1500) recently have been quite pleased. Id say get it for sure, although Id make sure to get a 3 year warranty with it if not just for peace of mind. In canada, I got the 3 year return to depot warranty for 150 extra which seemed like a fine deal for me.
P.S. If you are in the US, use the $300 off coupon code and if you are a college student I believe you also get a discount on top of that. -
Vostro's are priced low because Dell expects repeat purchases from these businesses, or buying the machines in bulk, would make up the price difference. Obviously, these Vostro's are meant to be sold to us who create fake businesses

lol they never even asked me for a business...on the phone "will you be using this for business or home use?"..."home"..."ok"
The only thing I wish is that they had a 7200rpm hard drive option...I hope it wont hurt my gaming performance too much... -

A vostro might be inferior to a pre-built ASUS, but for a custom built Asus, I dont think ASUS will be superior.
G1S is of course pre-built
Get the dell, with the money saved, add on a 3 year completecare warranty - that IMHO is a better value than a 1-year warranty no completecare Asus G1S -
I do want a machine that will last at least 4 years, I don't abuse them but I will probably be using it daily -

Well for example the problems they are having with some screens, the ddr2 graphics, etc. I just mean Dell isn't known for the best quality, but at the same time are still a great company...There reputation is a little shotty but nothing to worry about IMO.

Gotcha... so I have been playing with specs a little more, and now comes the question, what is best a Vostro 1500 or the Inspiron 1520. with similar configurations they are at within 50 dlls.
Vostro 1500, too good for the price?
