The 1500 with 1GB RAM (2 dimm -- 2x512MB) will have one stick under the keyboard and one in the RAM slot.
But, what if I order a 1500 with only 512MB RAM (1 dimm, as per my invoice). Where will this stick be placed?
I want to add an additional 2GB stick later. But, I'll do it only if the bottom RAM slot isn't occupied.

They put two 256mb sticks if you order 512mb ram I believe.

Hmmm, I'd ask Dell(though their CSR's may not know), but I would assume it would be at the bottom panel. However, you may want a Vostro owner to chime in. Or it could be a Dell site error, they have weird things on their site somethings, like the Dell ghosts I found last year :p

I would be very pissed to find 2x256 MB .. matter of fact, I'll go ahead and ask for some discount for misleading information
my whole decision hinges on where this single 512MB will be placed
i'm purposely not opting for the amazingly priced smart value package, simply because i want to upgrade RAM later, without any "wastage"

I'm not too surprised that they said "no"
Btw, looking at your reply, it does seem that its indeed 2x256 MB and not 1x512 MB

Just sell the unneeded stick(s) when you upgrade. They'll get worthwhile money on ebay. There's no "wastage" because you're not throwing it away.

Yes, ebay will be my last resort. But, i'd like to avoid going to ebay in first place.
Also, if its 2x256MB, then adding a 2GB will make it 2.25GB total, while i was aiming for 2.5GB total

I'm getting the impression the whole reason for this thread is because you don't want to change the stick under the keyboard. Is that correct?

But you might want to claim extra performance out of the Dual Channel option by having the same amount of memory in each of the slots.... So I think DELL usually put them in pairs... 512 MB = 2 x 256 MB, 1 GB = 2 x 512 MB, 2 GB = 2 x 1 GB, etc.

Copy and paste from my order:

    311-7260 512MB, DDR2, 667MHz 1 DIMM

Looks like one DIMM. Can't tell you where it will be though.

Where ever it is... it ain't rocket science... just flip open the manual and it looks pretty easy to change the Ram ... whether it is below the keyboard or at the back.... but i think that ur Ram wouldn't run on dual channel if you put in 1*2gb along with the 1*512MB module...someone correct this if i am wrong?

Ordered a 1505 2 months with 1x512mb.. came with one slot. I think Dell has pretty much abandoned their use of 256mb sticks. Regardless they will not give you 2x256 if you order 1x512.

When you order over the phone you can request the ram be loaded under the keyboard so you have easy access to the other slot.

    * bump *

does any vostro owner want to take a shot at it?
I called Dell, most of them didn't know about the 2 slots in different places in Vostro 1500
