I am trying to find out just how reliable 1510 is, as there is a lack of reviews.
I really like the thin profile, and 256MB Nvidia dedicated gpu, but I couldn't find any reviews or comments on the notebook.

It is good to have 30 day money back guarantee, but who wants to go through that especially after moving backups over to a new computer.

No one can really comment on the reliability of a laptop that has been out such a short period of time! Its like saying a car is reliable when you have only driven it for 3 days.

The ones ProfessorShred provided are the only reviews I found over the internet. Well I passed this level of searching for reviews and ordered the laptop. Because I have no time I need the laptop earlier. So I took the risk and ordered the laptop without checking any reviews. I expect it to be at least as good as the Vostro 1500 with less graphics card which I don't need acually. They were on real time sale so I couln't resist. Now I can't wait to get my 15" black beauty !!! :p

    Thanks guys.
Saad, when are you getting yours. I just have a topic in "which laptop should I buy" category, you can check that. I think I will go with Vostro 1500 as well.
Lack of Latch on 1510 kinda makes it flimsy looking.

no it built better than the old Vostro , and thinner and a lot lighter, I can't wait get it.

my older sister got it and she showed it to me and I liked it better than the Inspiron and older Vostros like 1400, 1500.

I think this Vostro 1510 with WUXGA screen is the current best Dell deal , this one comes with either your choice of XP pro or Vista Business with down grade XP pro discs or up grade Vista Business discs.

I find the Vostro 1510 still to be higher priced when compared to a similarly equipped 1500 by several hundred. I also don't like the squared look of the 1510. The 1500 while looking bulky has a nice rounded look to it.

I recently ordered a 1500 instead of a 1510. The E-Series Latitude is the only laptop i'm looking forward to.

One of the reasons why I went for this laptop is that it was on a real good discount two weeks ago.

I also agree that I found 1510 to be more expensive when similarly configured.

i've heard some comments about it seeming slightly weak and flimsy, and it doesn't look quite as solid and well built as the 1500, but I haven't seen it for real so I really can't comment.
    I am anyway.

ok, you've seen it in the flesh, so I can't talk. I still prefer the 1500 design though. the 1510 looks almost... just overly practical, no sense of design.

I hate to disagree as i'm going by the NBR review posted for the 1310 and it referred to the laptop as feeling flimsy with some flex i.e. "cheap". The previous Vostro line had a strong build with no noticeable flex.

    http://www.notebookreview.com/default.asp?newsID=4362

    Build and Design

" Unfortunately, the lighter weight and thinner profile come at some cost. Namely, the plastics used in the chassis feel thin and in some areas, such as above the keyboard and on the palmrests, there is a significant degree of flex. The edges of the chassis are also sharper than what we've seen on earlier Dell notebooks and these sharp edges and thin plastics make the design of the Dell Vostro 1310 feel slightly unfinished or unrefined."

    Conclusion/b]

"....the chassis isn't as nice as we hoped ... the edges are sharp and could be smoother or more rounded, the case feels more flimsy than the earlier Vostros, the touchpad button placement is bad, and the mono speaker does not provide a good audio experience."

    Cons

    * Glossy LCD lid is a magnet for fingerprints
    * Chassis plastics feel too thin and hollow
    * Mono speaker is painfully weak
    * Uncomfortable touchpad buttons
    * No S-video or HDMI port
    * Price as configured is a little expensive compared to the XPS M1330

I was trying to decide this week between the 1500 and 1510, and went with the
1500. The 1500 was cheaper, appears to be a little bit more rugged, and comes with a better video card (8600M GT vs 8400M GS).

Check the Vostro 1310 NBR review. They have large scale pictures in the review. Even though it's the 1310 review a lot of it can be applied to the 1510. Warn though, you may not like what you'll read. :p

According to the review of the Vostro 1310, the major downsides of this laptop are the weak mono speaker and the plastics. The first one doesn't apply to the Vostro 1510. The second one might not apply as well.

The Vostro 1400 looks flimsy compared to the Vostro 1500. ( Personal opinion)

Don't have a 1400 but looks flimsy and is flimsy is a totally separate issue. Looking flimsy is not a deal breaker for me. ;) As I mentioned to the previous poster he was looking for large pics of the machine. I also highlighted the things that I found of concern regarding the 1310. When the 1510 review gets posted we'll find out if these two machines really compare in build quality.

The Vostro xx10 series is not appealing to me for personal reasons because they tried to go after the Thinkpad crowd and I already own a T60. As was stated earlier you can put a good GPU in the current Vostro xx00 laptops.

LOL it is, but as I said looking flimsy and actually being flimsy is a different matter to me. I've own stuff that looked flimsy/cheap but it wasn't. I could deal with the 1400 looking cheap as long as it wasn't I would be ok with it. :)

    Hey there,
I got the Vostro 1510 (T8100, Geforce8400GS, Windows-XP). I like the notebook. However, the fan is annoying! In idle (I don't touch the notebook), the fan starts running ervery 50sec for about 20sec and is loud! Do other people face the same problem? Do I have to accept such a behaviour. The CPU temperatures vary between 43°C and 48°C (the fan starts at 48°C).

The 1510 is FAR superior to the junk 1500 model. No contest. The 1500 was a failure due to its massive size and featureless interface. Dell finally got it right this time around.

I don't think it's normal. There are many reviews for the Vostro 1310 and they don't mention such an issue. There is another 1310 review on youtube and it says the optical drive is suprisingly quiet !

    One question for Vostro 1510.
As you know it doesn't have S-video or HDMI output. Can we connect it to TV via VGA port? Thanks

You know on dell.ca it says that the Vostro 1510 has a s-video out :( :( . But it's wrong and I knew that after I had placed the order. So, please experts I need an answer to that question too :)

I was interested in the 1510 as a replacement to the Inspiron E1505. I liked the thin and light design and XP option. Will I be disappointed by the state of the speakers on this machine as sound will be used a fair bit?
The other option is the 1500 (bigger but possibly fine since I am used to the E1505). However, I will be needing this machine for everyday work soon, from office to home (via car).

    Thoughts please.

I know the XPS 1530 is the best of both worlds (portable, light, multimedia) albeit more expensive, but I am put off by Vista and the glossy screen. Should I be put off by the OS and screen type?

Okay. Today I finally made my order. All the parts were marked as "available at the warehouse" so I hope to see my lappy in the first part of June. My configuration was:
    -Vostro 1510 15.4" WXGA+ (1440 x 900) TrueLife
    -Intel Core 2 Duo T5870 (2.0GHz, 800MHz,2MB L2 cache)
    -2GB (1x 2GB) 667MHz DDR2
    -160GB HDD SATA (5400 rpm)
-256MB nVidia GeForce 8400GS (64 bit) graphics card
    -Windows Vista Business
    -Intel PRO/Wireless 3945 802.11a/b/g Mini Card
    -Dell TrueMobile 355 internal Bluetooth
-Fingerprint reader & touchpad- Vostro, Inspiron

I would really have liked a penryn processor(T8100) but I'm with quite tight budget and the T5870 was the only processor at the warehouse, so it was the only choice for me. Because there was no big difference between the price of the Dell and Intel wireless card I chose the Intel. The biggest dilemma I had was with the operatig system. I know that most of you would prefer XP over vista at the moment but I decided to give the vista a chance.

Sorry for the OT, I just wanted to share my excitement. :p

I have to agree with you that from all I've heard, and common sense, I don't believe the *10 models can be as durable as the *00 models. The thick magnesium alloy chassis in these things just rocks.
