I recently ordered a Vostro 1700 and I ordered it with the standard screen 1400x900 and Trulife. I was worried the screen resolution might not look good. Let me tell you, i'm glad I did order the standard resolution. I would hate to try and see the screen at a higher resolution. Unless you have very good 20/20 vision it might be tough reading things on the screen.

I ordered a Thinkpad T60 with the super high resolution and I find myself sitting very close to the screen.

Yeah that sounds right. I also decided to go with the standard resolution because I plan on playing games with it. It helps with the frame rates. :)

I bought mine with the WUXGA 1920x1200 screen, and love it. The resolution and the size of the screen are an ideal combination, IMO.

Attached is a screenshot of my desktop. View it on a 17" screen and see if the text and icon size is appealing to you or not. Alternatively, I from the top-left hand corner of the screen to the bottom right-hand corner of the browser window is exactly a sheet of A4 - print out the cut version, and apart from the borders of your printer, it should be a good representation of the 17" screen...
