I've just received my Vostro 1700. I'm wondering if anyone else has a problem with their matte WXGA+ (1440 x 900) display. Mine is an AUO3587. It has quite a bit of bleeding at the bottom of the screen, and also a little on the left. More annoyingly, though, the right side of the screen seems to be more bright than the left side.
The vertical viewing angle is also rather bad. I only have to move my head ever so slightly to cause discolouring.
Finally, it almost seems as if the image is projected onto a black raster, as if there's black space between the pixels. If I visit a website that has a background composed of black lines intercut with grey lines, my screen starts to flicker heavily.
Anyone else has issues like these?

I have the same screen in my 1700. Yeh, theres some light bleed at the bottom but not a huge amount and there are no screens with no light bleed whatsoever. Haven't really noticed one side being brighter than the other. And yeh, the vertical viewing angle is a little narrow but I think thats within advertised specs of the panel.
All in all I'm happy with my AUO3587 - I would have liked a glossy but wasn't an option at 1440x900 for the Vostro 1700 in the UK - only the 1920 -and I want to play games at native res -
I can see where you're coming from. On the whole, it is quite a nice screen. The slight imbalance in backlighting that I'm perceiving on my own display might well drive me nuts in the end though.
I've also noticed a grey spot just above the middle of the screen. It looks like a cluster of 2 or maybe even 3 dead pixels, but upon making a photo of the area, I noticed that the pixels are alive. I guess it's dust or something like that behind the panel. I suppose I'll ring technical support on Monday to have someone clean it (or replace the screen). -
hey how do i check the type of screen i have? I have wuxga and i need to know who made it

Got the matte WXGA+ (1440 x 900) display as well. Worst laptop screen I've seen in years. Horrible angles, uneven brightness, washed out. After a good deal of hassle with Dell customer service, got a tech out to replace the LCD. Greatly improved, although still not great (there's bleed along the bottom of the screen, but I actually like this because the uneven brightness makes the edges dark).
Alot of the hysteria about the different screen manufacturers is probably psychological, so I hesitate to add this fact: the original screen was AUO, the replacement is LG. This is *probably* a coincidence... -

I will be calling for replacement as well. Screen darker on the right, viewing angles horrible, brightness changes if I only slighty move my head.

Replacement is much better. Still an AUO panel, but without any of the problems of the first one. I'm rather pleased with it now.
