    Hi!

Thought I'd register here as Google seems to like this website and keeps pointing me here!

I would really appreciate a little help. I've just purchased a Dell Vostro 1700 and have a few questions. Firstly, I've always been a desktop user. This will be my first laptop so I have little knowledge of its workings, and worst of all, I've NEVER used Vista, only XP. I purchased it for surfing and a spot of gaming etc.

    The laptop specs:

    Vostro™ 1700 NB(N0517014)
    Intel® Core™ 2 Duo Processor T8300 (2.40 GHz, 3 MB L2 cache, 800 MHz FSB), Genuine Windows Vista™ Home Premium - English

    Base
    Intel® Core™ 2 Duo Processor T8300 (2.40 GHz, 3 MB L2 cache, 800 MHz FSB)
    Memory
    3072MB 667MHz Dual Channel DDR2 SDRAM (1x1024 + 1x2048 MB)
    Keyboard
    Internal Keyboard - UK/Irish (QWERTY)
    Video Card
    256MB nVidia® GeForce® 8600M GT
    Hard Drive
    320 GB (5400rpm) SATA Dual Hard Drive (2x 160GB)
    Microsoft Operating System
Genuine Windows Vista™ Home Premium - English
    Modem
    56.6k V.92 Capable Internal Modem & Adapter - UK
    Optical Devices
Fixed Internal 8X DVD+/-RW Drive including Software
    Wireless Networking
    Intel® Next-Gen Wireless-N MiniPCI Card
    Microsoft Application Software
    Microsoft® Works 9.0 - English
    Power Supply
    90W AC Adapter
    Primary Battery
    Primary 6-cell Lithium-Ion Battery (56 WHr)
    Dell System Media Kit
Resource CD - contains Diagnostics and Drivers
    Colour Choice
Matte Jet Black with 2.0 mega pixel camera
    LCD
    17.0" Widescreen WXGA+ (1440x900) TFT Display

My first question is this a good enough spec to play games? For example Call of Duty 4?

My second question is, where and how do I update drivers for the graphics card?

Are there any important updates that you think I must perform when I receive the laptop??

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Yes, that laptop is plenty good to play call of duty 4.

Dell supplies the most stable drivers on their website for all the components including graphics cards. Other people use modified graphics drivers that can often cause problems with the laptops such as not going to sleep or giving blue screens of death. Those can be had from: http://www.laptopvideo2go.com/

Run all the windows updates, and you should be fine! (Vista searches everyday for you so you don't even have to worry)
