Hi, I'm having an ugly experience with my Vostro 1700 (T7300, lcd 1920x1200, nvidia 8600gt etc etc...), which I purchased 1 months ago for 1140€. the laptop arrived with dead pixels, thet was replaced a with a new lcd which perhaps showed dead pixels again. so the lcd was replaced again with one without dead pixel. unfortunatly both the 2nd and the 3th LCD are terrible, since the suffer of something like interference since every 2/3 second lots of little little dots appear on the lcd. moreover the tech service discovered for chanche that probably I do not have the right vga (8400 instead of 8600). Finally the webcam and the mic are not functioning at all.
for all this reason a asked to dell a notebook replacement, but they said that they agree to replace the note, only if I will not ask a new repair in case the new note has an lcd with dead pixels   :(
the other possibility is to ask for a complete refound. in this last case ordering a new vostro will cost me 250€ more, and it is really to much for me!
a cheapest alternative could be a Dell Latitude D830 (T7300 with Nvidia quadro nsv 135, 15,4'' 1650x1050, no webcam, ...) that they would give me for 1250€ (at least 250€ off from regular price)

I know that Latitude has a better quality of the Vostro, but I have some complains with it:

    1. In has less "gadget" of Vostro: webcam, ports, mediadirect

    2. the VGA if a quadro, ok, but is equivalent to the 8400 not to the 8600GT of the Vostro

    3. the look.. I'm not crazy of it!

I'm afraid that I would have a beautiful machine but not fitting my need. My needs? math and stat calculation, db calculation, photo e video editing, web surfing.

A last point: i really want a 1920x1200 on 17" or 16580x1050 on 15.4" resolution, and in Italy you can't find any note with above 1200€ that is my maximum budget!

    Any advice? Latitude or Vostro?

PS. I'm sorry for my english but...

I think your Vostro is a lemon.
As long as you're OK with a 15.4" screen, I think you should try the Latitude.

    1. For math and stat calculation, db calculation, photo e video editing, web surfing, you don't need the gadgets -- and they're not working on your Vostro anyway.
    2. For math and stat calculation, db calculation, photo e video editing, web surfing, the Quadro will be fine.
    3. The Vostro is not a beauty queen either.

I hope whatever laptop you get, it turns out better than the one you have now.

yes, my vostro (btw do you know that in Italian vostro means "yours", why did Dell choose this name?) is probably a lemon, but I liked it! al least is the best I can have with my money! I saw the Acer Aspire 7720G...awuful machine!
So now I'm really in troublei cold also wait few month waiting for the Santa Rosa refresh but I'm afraid that I would really run out of my budget!

You could look into HP or Lenovo as well.

The HP Business are cheap to expensive depending on which model in US though so I am guesing the same in Italy.

I am not sure about the Lenovo prices in Italy but there fairly good in US.

Or you could go with a Dell! I have a Dell Latitude D830 and its great!
