Received mine last week - lovely machine to use. Not as heavy as I feared, comfortable keyboard, nice screen(I ordered the WUXGA one, loads of real estate!) with vibrant colours, and a solid feel to the overall design.

However, running my finger down the right-hand side of the screen casing, I can feel two bulges approximately 2" up from the base. Is this noticeable on anyone elses?

I'm debating whether to open it up - it probably just wants the surround clicking down into place against the rear of the lid. But at the same time, I'm also thinking that it isn't quite 'right', and having paid good money, I should expect Dell to repair/replace - I paid for a new machine, and having not paid for an outlet or refurb, I should be in receipt of a machine which is built correctly. Knowing my luck, I'll choose to not bother, but find in 6-18 months time that there has been pressure applied to the side of the screen all this time, and it starts to fail...

Anyone else noticed this? Would it be pedantic for me to request a replacement?

    Hi there!

I just got my Vostro 1700 this morning and I don't feel any bulges at all on any side of the casing.

If you're not satisfied (and I wouldn't want bulges on my casing either), then I don't see any reason not to request a replacement. You definitely don't want to get down the road and be kicking yourself that you're having to have it repaired.

(I speak from a bad experience with my DV9700T that was only 32 days old when it went in for repair)

Squeezing it doesn't work. Without looking inside, I'd not want to apply more pressure than I've already done.

Aw heck, it's 6 screws. I'll take a look and see what the problem is. No, no, no. That'll invalidate their warranty. Pah, I'll send them an email. I'll bet there is just a tiny little catch/clip, but then again it's none of my business whilst the warranty is valid is it? :)

Will try and get a decent picture for folk to see when it's light next. :)

    Cheers!

I received my Vostro 1700 yesterday. I just checked and I don't see any bulges.

It's just me then. Cheers for taking a look. It's hardly noticeable, pictures are awful(it's midnight here, and I only had a table lamp on, and it's a very cheap camera), but they actually highlight the problem better than your finger could! :)

Dell have been known to use incorrect screws that are too long and cause bulges.

Aye, I would pop the bezel and take a look, but at the moment it isn't my problem... :)
