Just finished looking at my fan for any dust in particular from the outside. There it was, the dust gathering on the sides of the fan blades. i guess because of turning fan on the high always. Looks like dell doesn;t want me to touch the fan part since it is not on the manual. so no help there. anyway i am worrying about the fan cloggin and overheat as a result. should i "vaccum" it out (putting the vacum on the fan and suck it up) or go for the spray cans and spray the inside? i want to stay away from opening my notebook up and do it externally. thks

Do not use a vacuume. It creates static electricity.

My Compaq fan collects dust all the time, I always keep an air can nearby to spray through the vents... does the trick every time!

:O. i already did it about three time with the desktop computer fans and the case. It worked great but i guess it is not for notebook computers. So do i just get a compressed air and spray it on the fan directly and the collected dust is gone?

Use compressed air to blow it out. Remember though to stick a toothpick or something to immobilize the fan, as using compressed air to shoot at a fan causes it to overspin its rated RPMs by a huge amount and wear out. So immobilize the fan while you blow the air in there.

If it is a Vostro 1400, you can easily remove the cover on the bottom and clean up the heat sink.
