I've been looking at Vostro's price for a around a month now and it has gone up (atleast indirectly, webcam gone etc etc).

My question is that, is there a chance of a drop before December?

Sure is. There is also a chance the prices keep going up until December as well.

they are very likely to keep going up until christmas, then fall back in the february/march period where demand falls

imo the prices started so low due to the fact dell was totally unaware as to how popular these would actually be.. once they found out they were getting more orders than they could handle they started raising the prices. when i first ordered the vostro through the business division the guy told me the prices were a "test run" and they could go up or down but he did suggest i order at that time and that was in july and the prices have gone way up since then..

The prices still look like 'test-run prices' compared to all the other brands. I think i'll buy it now.

I've been chasing laptop prices for a few years. I found the best price is in mid-summer (back to school deal). Then at Thanksgiving, there are some really cheap laptop that are low end and with limited quantity. You may be disappointed in the next couple months. There may be a price drop when new model release just like how they get rid of the 6400/1405.

Ya as someone said before the mid-summer back to school period is best. For some reason this year, the Inspiron/Vostro launch end of June / early July was too good to pass up especially with all those coupons. The system I ordered in July is $120 more expensive today.

I think it was ~$850 with your config at the lowest price since it was released. Basically, $599 plus the video card (from 128MB one), 2GB RAM (from 1GB), and webcam upgrade.

The prices on the Vostro and Insiron look to me to be up by $300-$500 from just a couple of months ago.
