I'm contemplating purchasing a Vostro 1500 a little bit after Christmas, however since the new Penryn 45 nm cores are coming out a few months after that I am unsure about what to do.

1.Can I purchase a 1500 in December with a mediocre CPU and then upgrade to a new Penryn when it comes out or do I have to buy a completely new laptop?

2.Also, can I upgrade the GPU later if I get my Vostro with a 8600gt?

3.Finally, what is the best size screen in terms of resolution

4.and how much bigger is the 17" than the 15", is there a a huge increase in weight and will it be ok to carry around with me every day at school?

    Thanks.

Usually when they move from one chip to the next, it does not allow for upgrades. Penryn may not offer any benefits depending on your needs.

Most laptop GPUs can't be upgraded though I am not certain on the 1500.

Personal preference here. Check some out if you can.

I would recommend against a 17" notebook if you need mobility. Even a 15" can be cumbersome at times.

You can upgrade a 1500 GPU, but only if you do not have the Intel integrated graphics. So you might as well buy the 8600 now if you're going to want it later.

Forget a 17" machine on campus. I'm trying it, and even though I have one of the lightest 17" machines in existence, it is still too heavy once you add the books and paper and other crap you'll have to carry. I'm actually considering buying a supplementary 12" D420 right now.

I have the 1500, and I love it for school...and it can play the latest...too bad I don't own any of them.

@Greg...so I would be able to upgrade my graphics card in the future????

You can only upgrade the card if Dell decides to make upgraded card for your system. Seems like you have the one of higher options, so the answer is no for now, and will depend on Dell.

I want to do the following:

Games like TF2, CSS, maybe UT3
    Microsoft Office
    Watch Videos
    Internet

I recently bought a completely broken T23 and poured $400 into it and I'm actually quite happy aside from the problems with playing any games whatsoever. This is really the only reason why I want a new laptop.

Btw, has anyone had success with the Dell Outlet?

    Thanks!

I promote the Outlet whenever possible. I purchased my rig from the outlet for 1019 + tax. My buddy also purchased a Vostro 1400 and we're both REALLY pleased with our machines. Comes with the same exact warranty option as a new machine AND you don't have to wait for it to be built.

I own a 1500 and I can safely say that if you can't carry the 1500 for long periods (try weighing it at a store yourself) there's no way the 1700 will equate with portability.

If the Vostro has a graphics card upgrade only Dell can announce and provide it, I wouldn't keep your hopes up though.
