Has anyone ordered a Vostro with the WXGA+ screen? I heard those are the screens that are very grainy on the Inspirons. I'm trying to decide between the WXGA+ & the WSXGA+.

    Thanks

both have the problem. it's the coating or something. i don't know if there's certain bad batches of screens or what but i'm hoping i don't get one. i have a vostro 1500 with the WXGA+ screen arriving tomorrow.

Grr. I hate this misunderstanding. There is NO coating on the glossy screens. However, there IS a coating on the matte anti-glare screens. Just think about it, what kind of coating are you going to put on a matte screen to make it glossy? That just doesn't make sense. The coating is put on top of the glossy to stop glares.

I can't say exactly if you can or not, but if you are able to, it won't look good. The LCD has its native resolution it likes (namely 1440x900) and if you change it from that, it has to resize everything to make the fewer pixels fit on the larger panel.

Yes you can but that will only worsen the things.... It is better always to work in the native resolution of the LCD for obtaining best quality display....

There certainly is a coating/film on glossy screens, just not the same kind that is on the anti-glare. Here's two links that explain the differences between the two screen types rather well:

I ended up getting a WXGA+ for my 1500. It really is luck of the draw on the quality display you get. I ended up with a Philips and it's near perfect with 0 graininess and very little backlight bleeding.

Mine has the AUO panel, it looks great. My 1505 has the same panel and looks exactly the same. Both are wxga+

I just got a 1520 for my sister with the WXGA screen and it looks great.

Where can I find out which lcd it came with? I tried going to dell.support.com but my laptop wasn't listed on the 'sytems' area.

Just got my Vostro 1400. The screen is an SEC; very pretty. I do have one dead pixel :(, but apart from that, the only other problem I've found is the much-discussed wobbly battery, which is indeed very wobbly. Naturally, when sitting on a table or on my lap, it isn't an issue, but while moving the laptop around it does come off as a bit unsettling.

double click it, then go to the details tab. Select Hardware IDs and see what it says.

Sorry to hi-jack the thread a little, but does this mean that the WXGA (1280x800 Res) screens aren't affected for the most part, and that only WXGA+ and WSXGA+ are affected?

I'd hate to have to keep returning my Vostro once I get it if the screen graininess is a big problem...

^I'm sure you can exchange your LCD within the first 10 days if the problem is really bad. I was able to exchange it three times last year with my e1505.

I talked with Dell Tech Support, they indicated that I have an LG LCD! No wonder it's so beautiful.
