Woot! I've had my Vostro for less than a minute, and I came here to say thanks to the people on this site for being such a good resource. I have just one unanswered question: Should I keep Vista Basic. It just seems like a cripled version of XP, only slower and more resource hunger. Is it worth all the trouble just to use XP though? Will I see an increase in performance in games like Oblivion?

Vista Basic... meh, depends on what version of XP you have to put on it. I'd take XP pro over Vista Basic any day, and in fact, I'd probably take XP Home over it too. Vista Home Premium or above though I'd seriously consider keeping. Vista's not a bad operating system, but Vista Basic is pretty crippled.
